Upgrading CPU question

Hey,

I currently run a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ but thats getting a bit old now and I want to upgrade to dual core. I have thinking about getting a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (Socket 939). I have a socket 939 motherboard, but will I need anything else to support dual core?

As long as your BIOS is up to date and the motherboard support is, you should be just fine. All this info can be found on the manufacturers website.

Bl00dFox - He already has the motherboard, this no point in getting another AND another processor. They are faster, but not THAT much faster. And if you look, most prices pretty much even out when you include the motherboard

I all ready have the motherboard and I don't really want to have to buy a new motherboard.

Yeah the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (Socket 939) is about £200 (Some shops are higher and some are lower). About a month ago I updated the BIOS so I guess my BIOS should be ok? Ill check ASUS' website for more info on my motherboard.

On the website it says:
AMD Athlon 64FX/Athlon 64 up to 3800+

So does this mean I wont be able to use the 4400+ version?

If I had to guess, I'd say no. However most are compatable. Besides just the over-all specs, be sure and read the bios updates. Sometimes they are more specific in what's supported.

This is confusing because in the BIOS update it says: "1. Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx"

When I go to the link and enter my motherboard model it says no matches found.

Do you think it would be good to give ASUS a call?

Upon further reseach, it seems that all the ASUS socket 939 boards (Even though mine is not listed) do support the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (Socket 939), think I should go for it and get the new processor?

I have no clue what that MQ stands for, but if you just search for A8V, I find "Supports AMD Socket 939 Athlon 64FX/Athlon 64 X2/Athlon 64"

Only if the bios supports it. I know some computers/motherboards could use duel core, but they never had the support implemented in their bios. Just as I mentioned once with my laptop. Not with duel core, but it could handle a Turon(hardware wise) However, to get this, you have to modify the bios(as in reflash and all)
 
I know what you mean... My Albatron K8SLI ( one of the really early s939 SLI boards) didnt have dual core support either.. since they wernt built yet when the motherboard was released iirc. but with the v1.08 and later BIOS, you could run the X2's in it tough :)
