How Much Performance Gain For Adding a Second 7600gt in SLI, and a Gig of RAM

Drain You

New Member
My Specs

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Dual Core
Asus M2n4-SLi
1gb of Corsair DDR2
7600gt Video Card
Rosewill 550Watt PSU

I was just wondering how much gain I would get from getting another gig of ram and another Card to put in SLI. Im looking to Play Quake Wars on pretty high settings and some other games that are coming out soon.

You could sell your current 7600GT, take the money you were going to use to buy the second and get a very high end card.

The extra GB of RAM will help out.

^only problem with that would be I dont know where I would sell the card and get a decent price with it. I could get another 7600gt for around 140$ and from what Ive read SLI 7600gt's are very comparable to 7900

what does that have to do with the question asked?

i would ebay your current card for a 7900 or at least a 7800, and sli later.

It's a bit painful to have to explain this to you because it seems so evident.
1. Drain You is trying to increase the performance of his system.
2. Drain You and I share identical mobos.
3. I asked Drain You if he has tried to overclock his motherboard.

This is about as pedestrian an explanation as I can provide,
but then, my posting is similarly pedestrian and simple.
You use the work "spam" very loosely.
If you read my posting, you will notice that I am asking him if he has
tried to overclock his motherboard. It's not mysterious. It has no double meaning.
It bears no malice. It is not a difficult question.
If he answers, "yes", then I would ask other questions.
If he answers, no, then I probably wouldn't ask any other questions.
I really do not see any complexities or problems with my posting.
I don't believe any reasonable person would.
I am actually suprised that anyone would require an explanation regarding
what is so evidently, simple.
You have stumped me.
The question remains, why would anyone need an explanation of this posting?

It sounded much like you were asking how to OC the M2N in someone elses thread about SLi-ing some 7600GTs. And as you say yourself, that mobo sucks, so why would he try to OC it? He also might have like an FX-62 or something and he doesnt need to OC.

I know my mobo is screwed up--won't up-volt cpu.
But if Drain You responds that he has successfully oc'ed
and/or upped his cpu voltage,
then that might mean that I have a defective board,
and not all of these same boards suck.
If Drain You responds that he has not oc'ed his mobo,
then that is that. Though, I suppose I should pass on
info re. up-volting prob. w/this board.

As a matter of fact, I'd like to know if you have succesfully
up-volted the cpu on your old Asus board. Have you ?

My interest in this forum in only about computers--just computers.

good questions like you have deserve their own threads. don't be scared of clicking that 'new thread' button. it's much more appropriate than hijacking someone elses thread. it's like interrupting someone in the middle of a conversation. i hope that was pedestrian enough for you. pancho. ;)

Oh, now the term is "hijacking". I thought you were supposed to be
nice computer guys. I'm not sure, but I think this is called Keyboard courage,
you know, where it's easier to insult someone, call them names,
with a keyboard, when you wouldn't make such statements to
one's face. It's a seedy manner, but not uncommon on the
internet.

Here's a pedestrian explanation, again. Pay attention,
because explaining simplicities gets boring, and I'll do
my best to stay awake.

I am looking for info re. this apparently uncommon mobo on this forum.
I use search command for "m2n4-sli".
I find few, 3, postings re. this mobo.
I make a simple query, ie. "have you oc'ed this mobo"?
Some courageous fellows decide to call me names.

Let's see, hmm, I don't think I've left anything out, considering
how complex and difficult to understand is this matter.

Maybe everyone should step back a bit, and ask the magic
question, "Why don't we just talk about computers ?"

This adolescent, and somewhat cowardly name calling,
does really not seem fitting of what I believe to be a
computer forum. Were I to advise anyone re. their conduct,
then I would say, grow up, take the chip off of your shoulder,
and talk about computers. Really, is this such a kooky idea?
Keyword, "computers". Remember them ?

Begging to reiterate, I thought we were supposed to be
nice helpful computer guys. So, I suggest we drop this
ancillary subject matter, and stay with my simple question,
"Have you oc'ed this mobo?"

just shush please. you've made 3 or four long posts already and if you make any more llike that, i'm afraid computer forum wil have to buy a new server with a higher hdd capacity...

look. if you go into the section that says anything about mobo's, you will see a button that says 'new thread' if you press that, you start a whole new thread like this one you have hijacked. then, people can come to yours, and hopefully be able to answer your question. i myself have created many threads, and have only once been dissapointed. but then i bumped the thread back to the top, (waited 2 days first) and my question was answered promptly.

there were no insults or name calling (go ahead and read back, i'll wait here until you return)..........................................................................

ok, see? no one called you anything or insulted you in any way. you seem to be doing a good job of it yourself. maybe you don't understand how a forum works. maybe you are too young or too old to grasp the concept, so i will put it to you as 'pedestrian' as i can. ready?

people join forums to chat about things that they are into, or to get help with a problem they have. when one has a question, for example, about overclocking with a certain motherboard, they start a thread about it in the the motherboard section of a computer forum. they don't change the subject of someone elses thread about a video card into a motherboard question, and then get all pissy about it when someone else tries to tell them about it and direct them in the right direction.

you sir, will always be known to me as 'pedestrian pancho', who should've used the crosswalk :P

This is nonsense.
I read the only the first sentence of this last posting, and don't intend to read any more. Apparently, you don't believe that hijacking is a derogatory term, and that when you accuse one of hijacking, that you implicitly are calling him a hijacker. Clearly, I am neither capable of offering you clarity regarding your use of our english language, specifically, or of this matter, generally, nor do I feel any desire or obligation to spend any more of my time trying to help you. I can't imagine any circumstances, under which I would have written those sentences.

What is the procedure on this forum. Is there some sort of corrupt pecking order where you get to be insulting because of your seniority. If your expecting some sort of free ride, you won't get it from me.

Not sure, but is this a 14 or 15 year old peer group?. Maybe an adult is actually an alien here? Maybe, it's not really about computers at all. If that's it, then, I understand.

Pretty easy to find!

the M2N4-SLI held its own against the more expensive motherboards based on newer ATi and Nvidia chipsets. The BIOS is another matter altogether, though, as it ((doesn't allow you to increase the vcore or chipset voltage)), although you can increase the RAM voltage to 1.95V.

My machine scored 5315 re. 3DMark06.
Have been told this is a very decent score.
Still, would like the option of oc'ing this thing.
Think I'm going to return this mobo
in exchange for a Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5,
which seems more amenable to oc'ing,
but, to agree with your point, it is a
$169 motherboard, which is substantially
more pricey than the M2N4 at $95.

PS. Thanks for talking about computers.

I have the GA-M55SLI-S4 and it has settings for everything, you have to press Ctrl-F1 after the bios loads to open the overclocking settings on a Gigabyte
