My RAM just BBQ'd

I recently ordered a stick of Legend RAM from a local computer shop here in Auckland. (www.computerstore.co.nz) The RAM was DDR400 512Mb.
I was previously running a DDR333 256Mb stick. As both are compatible I just stuck the second one in... Is this what was caused it to fry? Or should they have worked together?

This is my motherboard.

I'm not sure of the Original Ram other than the specs but the new Ram is.

Many thanks

It shouldn't have caused anything to fry, they run at the slowest speed of all sticks installed.

I have seen people install RAM incorrectly which caused the RAM to get VERY hot; to the point where it melted a portion of the RAM slot. The computer still worked(I beleive RAM too) However, that one slot was unusable. It might of still worked, but they couldn't get RAM into it :P

Everything looks fine there. Did the install go well? Were you having problems getting it to fit? Could you of not seated it properly?

Ah the mysterious blue smoke that makes electronics stop working. Was it at least the old stick that burned out?

What exactly did you expect from noname junk generic RAM? Go buy yourself a decent stick of RAM and try it. You'll be much happier.

And when it BBQ'ed, did you cook ribs or catfish?

I have two sticks of the cheapest generic RAM from Newegg in the family comp, and it's been running fine for over a year.

Whoopdido.

I've sold hundreds of sticks of it during a year and lost half of them. So I stopped selling them altogether. You just happen to get lucky and be one of the 50% of lucky cheapskates.

Yeah, generic RAM is not like generic medication... it doesn't always have the same "ingredients" You may get lucky from time to time, but when you stress the components usually they don't stack up well, and will fail more often then not.

My situation is rather...bleak. I really can't afford anything better, trust me. It's difficult being a student who works part-time with no parents or family. But anywho, I got an email back from the supplier and they said that RAM cannot damage the motherboard if anything, the Motherboard damaged the RAM. Any thoughts on this?

Seeing as one RAM slot is messed now, would it be okay as I just bought a gig stick and stuck that in the working one?
