Asus P5B or Gigabyte DS3

I think the Gigabyte DS3 is "better", but it is supposed to have issues with Micron based memory (which is just about all high performance memory).
 
The vendor list for the gigabyte board is very short. I've got my S3 running micron RAM, most of the problems got worked out with the newer BIOS releases. The P5B had it's own issues with RAM (as did every 965 based board until the BIOS went through a few revisions)
 
Well, nowdays, if you buuy a new one, usually, the manufactures (ASUS or Gigabyte) will come with the newest BIOS release. And, if you see a Beta BIOS, you don't touch. It's the way you suicide the machine.

Now, to answer your question, ASUS P5B has a little less features than the Gigabyte, but that board is a preety tough guy. The 965 series is fine, although, I'd look into the 975 series.

For the Gigabyte, I never actually owned one, but I know that their technologies are much more advanced than ASUS, but the reliability is lower. It also has more features. The only problem I see on that board is the absence of the heatsink on the southbridge.

ASUS' features are more fool-proof eriented. My personal opinion is the ASUS
 
The DS3 has a heatsink on the north and south bridges. My only complaint is they are a little small but the sinks on the P5B don't look like they are that much better.
 
I would have liked to have seen active NB cooling on the DS3. I would still favour it over the P5B, but both are excellent boards.

Yup, me too... Oh well, I have a 120mm sitting onto of my graphics card, blowing full blast on it.

I would choose the DS3 over the P5B, by the way... Just make sure you get RAM which doesn't require more than 1.8 - 1.9v of power to operate. :)
 
crap, my friend's ram corsair twinx-xms2 6400 (jealous!!) requires 2.1watt but it is JEDEC compliant so does it mean that it can operate under 1.8v?

If it is JEDEC compliant, it probably automatically boots at 1.8V and relaxed timings, and it would work. You just have to up the voltage and set it to the correct frequency and timings
 
i have the p5b and it works perfectly for me, but it seems like ur gona get the other one (forgot), But if you do get the p5b make sure u buy the right ram since i hear ppl have a lot of probs with ram i would suggest xms2 for the p5b. i hope i helped some how lol
