The 8800 only takes up one physical slot, but the cooler takes up an expansion slot (still uses only one physical slot on the motherboard).
Yes you can use two of them in SLI.
What do you mean 2 of the x16? If you have a motherboard that supports dual x16 slots while in SLI mode, then yes you can.
It's called the Asus Crossfire Motherboard, not the Asus SLI Motherboard, so no.

Oh I see what you mean. It depends on the way the motherboard is designed, mine for instance has a slot between each PCI-E x16 slot, so I can use multiple double-wide video cards.
And yes, 2x 8800's are better.

I dont think hes talking about using SLI on a crossfire motherboard, because I already said that wasnt possible. I think hes asking if having two 8800's would fit on a motherboard such as the Asus Crossfire.

Guys its called the ASUS Crosshair not Crossfire. The ASUS Crosshair is 590SLI. And yes they will fit. Question is will the processor you currently have be able to support both or atleast 1 of them.
Here is my ASUS Crosshair board. The blue slots are the PCI-E 16 slots for graphics as you can see theirs plenty of space.

what do you mean with Crosshair? If its an SLI chipset, its SLI, no? only that motherboards name is asus crosshair.. but thats completely off topic tough( i think )
from what I gathered everyone one was confusing the ASUS motherboard name Crosshair with crossfire which I think they thought it wasnt SLI compatible when in reality it is. Since everyone was confused on the name they thought the ASUS crossfire was not SLI only crossfire capable.
So I was just hopefully correcting the terms.

I understand he said ASUS crossfire but I dont see any motherboard from ASUS called the Crossfire. I see a few that are crossfire enabled but not as the model name, thats why I said he most likely meant the Crosshair as I can see why someone might get the names confused.

As far as the CPU to support 1 or 2 of them, I was going with the 5200 X2, will that be enough?

You can fit two 8800's in there, because there no wider then the current dual-slot cards. And that PSU is deffinetly strong enough for an 8800GTX, but most likely not two because its only 48A, you may want to look for a slightly higher one.
Just make sure there is enough room length wide for the cards, because they are insanely long.
