how big should my harddrive be for running linux on it? and to run programs and save stuff?

and how would i pick the hdd like one would have xp pro then linux.

lol nobody besides you knows how big of a harddrive you need. And when you install linux, you should be able to select which harddrive and what partition to install it on. And when its installed, everytime you boot up, you just have to chose which one to boot onto from a menu.

I'm running ubuntu with seperate / and /home drives. Totalling 109.6GB

Combined I am using 19.2Gb but that's with some large games installed and lots of MP3's.

Does that give you a better idea?

For Ubuntu, they recommend that you have at LEAST 2GB free for the actual install, but other distros vary.
You need to look at the specs for the distro you want to use.

To play it safe maybe allow 10Gb for the install and whatever you think you might need for other things.

The installer should tell you which HDD has XP installed on, so it should be simple to choose. If in doubt, cancel the installation and ask for help.

20Gb - 30GB I would say. But i've used Ubuntu on a 8 or 10GB so it depends. ON how much you use it and install other software. :)

42 terrabytes

depending on what you are going to do and what file system you use, ext2, ext3, reiser, ufs, etc

then you need root partition, and a swap partition, and a home parition (if you choose). Or just a root partiiton if its ext3 FS

ill prolly get a 100gb hdd
cause it depends on what i save on the drive.
what type of stuff do i save in linux, unbuntu.

I'm sorry but I still don't think you are grasping what linux is (despite my reply to your pm a few days ago)

What "type of stuff" you save depends on what you do.

If you write a document then you'll save the document.
If you use a spreadsheet, then you'll save the spreadsheet.
If you take a photo and upload it to your machine then you'll save an image.
etc.

Linux is an Operating System.
Pretend for one second that your Microsoft Windows is not called Windows anymore, it's called "Linux". Everything you normally do in Windows (in most cases) you can do in Linux. So, everything you would normally save.... guess what... you can save in Linux.

I think perhaps you need to do some more research before you give it a try.
To be perfectly honest a 100Gb HDD would be wasted unless you save a hell of a lot. There aren't THAT many large games that work under Linux so you won't be eating space with those.

Here's a beginners guide to Linux Desktops (there are many) that you might find interesting: http://techgage.com/article/beginners_guide_to_linux_desktops
