Laptop for College

I found this laptop first off from PCgamer magazine in which it got an 82%. It looks like I will most likely purchase a laptop, with the help of my parents instead of a desktop, as I move on to college and continue with my football career. here is the link:

I was going to add the T7600 duel core proc. 2gb of ram. and a 100 gb hard drive. There are a few other items on the list that I was going to add, such as the word package, and go with media center edtion for the OS. Will the 7600 work for a "video game" laptop (if such things exist). I would like to use this laptop for awhile, considering the price. If this one is not a very good choce, could I get a better reccomendation?

dont quote me on this... im not very good with computer's but im looking for the same thing so ive done alittle reaserch... so i know alittle... it looks like thats not a bad laptop should play games just fine its not the best the video card should work good for almost all games( unless ur into like 3D super video games :) ) ... again it looks like a good laptop but it looks alittle pricey you could prolly find one for a few hundred dollar's less with the same things

or a
Sony VGN-FE790
15.4" WXGA TFT with XBRITE-HiColor Technology and MOTION EYE Camera
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7200 / ICD 2.0 GHz
1 GB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-533, 1 GBx1) Windows Vista Premium Ready
160 GB Hard Disk Drive
DVD+-R DL_DVD+-RW_DVD-RAM Drive

those are 2 laptops im looking into getting they both are about the same if not better then the one you picked out... for a few hundred dolar's less.. again dont quote me on this lets see if the next person who post's agree's with me. i just wanted to give you an opinion cuz its hard to get anything ont his site >.<

btw, if you don't mind dell, and you don't mind buying from ebay. Let me know.

Dell offers great performing notebooks for prices much lower than other companies. This is accomplished by free advertisement via all the bloatware you get. But that's nothing a simple reformatting can't fix.

So if you can stand the mediocre looks, i'd recommend you go Dell.

Hmmm...like an xps notebook? Also, what do you mean bloatware...I don't want any of that if at all possible. I did notice the price was hefty on that laptop I linked above. But since I have never looked at a laptop for gaming/studies/everyday use...I thought that one was a good fit.

I was looking at the Alienware laptops, they go with amd proccessors, dont know if thats the greatest thing at the moment. Since Intel has the lead on that market. But I'm not sure on the price...its around 3.5 K for what I want. But they do have dual core GPU's...which is a plus, also they are beautiful...Love that Conspiracy Blue.

Sure, Alienware's are great... if you dont mind throwing away money. I would go with a Core 2 Duo Dell with 2GB of RAM, and a 7900 video card.

Yeah thats what I thought...when it it 3.5k without any word processing programs etc etc. So with Dell you get the most bang for your buck?

I have been snooping around the dell website and found that their XPS notebooks have the option of a Blu-Ray Disc player, for high def. dvd watching and such. How necessary is this? If I went with this model the price would be 4.5k...way too much. And if I go without the Blu-ray, the price would be around 3,500. Still very expensive, but I am being helped out by the parents.

I would say Blu-Ray is unecesary right now, maybe a couple years down he road.

I was looking even further through the Dell XPS notebook site, and they have so much crap that they want you to buy, but a few things did catch my eye. For college, mild gaming (if that) and everyday use, would I need items such as wireless internet cards, bluetooth, wireless routers, mobile broadband, and a docking station?? Or would the laptop, and the universities internet be fine for what I want to do?

thats like a midrange laptop for gamers rather than for college. you can pretty much buy any current laptop for doing homework.

No, I'm not talking about the XPS. I'd recommend an E1505 for you if you want to go with a discrete graphics card. But if you don't mind the smaller monitor (14.1 inch) and an integrated vid card, then you can settle for a DELL E1405.

Right now, the prices are around 100-200 bucks more expensive than usual but this can be blamed for the stupid "holiday" season. You might want to wait until after the holiday where prices will drop considerably from where they are at right now.

You don't need bluetooth. Wireless card comes with it, you don't need anything else. You can get a wireless router from people on ebay if you need one.

This is the specs I'd recommend:

Dell E1505
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0 Ghz)
2G DDR2 RAM @ 533 mhz
ATi Radeon X1400 256MB
At least 80 G of RAM
1 Year Dell warranty.
I wouldn't recommend spending 100 to upgrade to XP pro because it comes with XP Media Center Edition which is suitable for your needs.

You can find this for around $1400.

I'm selling mine right now for $1200 shipped. Mine is 1 Week old and comes with 11 more month of warranty.

The specs are the same as I've listed but it has 120G's of harddrive space.

Also comes with all legal software:

XP professional
Microsoft Word 2003
Avast Professional 4.7
Cyberlink Power DVD
Nero Ultimate Edition 7
Stopzilla Spyware/Adware Professional
11 Months DELL warranty

I'm selling it for $1200 shipped which I consider a steal considering you can't even find the base laptop with these specs for this price let alone all of the included software.

Let me know. Either way, good luck to finding a laptop.

And if you're wondering why I'm selling this laptop, it's because I've run into some car problems that require big bucks to repair.

Since I've ran into problems with the other forums saying that I was probably a scammer, and that I'm lying about my car problems, I've included a link.

Good luck.

Wow your laptop does sound good. Although I think I'm going to buy one "fresh" reason for this is because it will put the parents at ease, knowing they have a product with no bagage (not saying yours does). I have awhile to look around, I want to make my final decision on where I will be playing football, and make my decisions accordingly. I'm pretty sure though, that I will be going with a Dell, final specs to be hammered out at a later time. Thanks for all your help.

That's the reason I thought you should buy mine. I've tweaked XP to perform better, I've got usable programs, and I've reformatted and got rid of all the bs bloatware that comes with a new computer. So ... it's more "fresh" than one that comes out of the factory.

But it's ok. No worries. I wish you luck to finding one! Also, register on http://forum.notebookreview.com/ to read some reviews about the DELL E1505 as well as finding some good discount coupons for them. I hope you find a good deal!

best of luck

p.s.

it's nice to hear that you respect your parents money. :)
