how to remove cpu from heatsink thermal pad (i tried everything,)

like the title implies, i cant remove my 3400 from an old heatsink and i have tried everything, even tried prying it off with a butter knife. i also dont want to damage the thermal pad, so scraping off everything is out of the question
 
i cant disturb the thermal pad though. wont that dissolve it?

and another question. can i turn on my computer with a different proc and a different heatsink for just a minute to see if windows will load, but not use any type of thermal pad or thermal grease? or will it overheat too quickly? (the proc in question is a sempron 2800)

i mean, i just have to see the windows login screen, then i'll turn it off. will that overheat it too quickly?

No, that should be fine.

It sometimes helps to warm it up by running the PC first, then removing it. You really shouldn't have pulled it out of the socket with the HSF still on it, though, and you won't be able to get it back in (nor should you try) until you've removed the HSF. I've found it's sometimes possible to slide the CPU off the side of the HSF when this sort of thing happens, particularly if you can find some way to warm it slightly.

As for damaging the thermal pad, since you intend to remove the CPU from the pad, you really should clean it off and reapply thermal paste anyway for best cooling performance. They never work quite so well once you've pulled it off.

ok i only ask because i have this problem where my computer wont boot, and i figure that i either fried my proc, or i corrupted windows. this will tell me whichof the two is the perpetrator. i'll post again in a min to tell of my success or failure.
 
OK *HUGE SIGH* i figured out that my problem is corrupted windows, and not my proc. *another sigh of relief*
 
and huge thanx for the heat tip. it worked wonders. the proc slid right off and everything is back in my computer. no all i have to do is buy windows again :(

lol i bought my computer barbones with 256mb ram, onboard vid, 40gb hdd, sempy 2800, and a 210W psu. all my programs consisted of a dowloaded version of windows xp and that was all. i never recieved a cd key, a cd, or even a receipt. trust me. i would glad-heartedly take your advice, but i'm not in the financial state to do anything at the moment :rolleyes:

EDIT: "ask your friend/s". friends? what are those??? lmao
