DVD-RAM drive problem

k my aunt has a Toshiba Satellite Laptop with a DVD-RAM drive. It will read already burned CD-Rs but will not read blank CD-Rs. She said she was able to burn in the past so it's not a compatibility issue. Awhile ago she had this same problem so she sent it in and they replaced the mobo which fixed the problem but now it persists. Any ideas on whats wrong?

Generally you can read off of a blank disk. It will just show as an empty drive to start off with. You wouldn't see a non existant disk label when going to look at the drive's icon in W.Explorer or MyComputer. If errors are appearing when going to burn data to a blank that could be from bad media. If you burn enough dvds and cds alike you will see that often. Other then those things the drive itself could be at fault.

well when I click on the drive in my computer, it says please insert a disc into drive D but there is already a disc in it.

Have you attempted to burn a disk or just read off of it? With a blank you won't see anything since "nothing" is on the disk to begin with. There's no disk label to appear in MyComputer or W.Explorer to start with. If you try burning data or a video to the disk and still see problems it's one of two things then. Either a bad blank or the drive is toast. It sounds more like a possible bad batch of blanks. Remember that stuff is mass produced with the occasional folly there. I get a few bad ones out of 2 or 3 100 packs on occasion.

That's a real pain at times when you can't figure out why that is the case until you try a few and find out... useless crap was mixed in with the good ones. I ran into two bad batches of dvd-rs with track data something seen on a full 50 pack of disks with one brand and several out of another's where you couldn't use them for anything. I'm talking factory sealed 50 packs there.

Memorex? For some reason I'm not surprised with that brand. They are far from the best there. For a long time now I have been using the TDK cd-rs for vcd projects as well as backing up groups of files. When going to try a 50 pack of dvd-rs(one of the two brands) all 50 of them saw the track data number on every disk brand new in a factory sealed container!

I had been getting discount 50 packs of a generic at a pc show that make periodic visits to the area until those started seeing the same crap. Tnen the TDKs? What's going on here? was the big one! Maxell was a favorite in the vhs days until they went foobar. Sony dvd-rs have been good so far until... ? That about sums that up.

The ones used here by Sony are the dvd-rs not dvd+rs. So far those have seen some great results. But anything massed produced can see rejects at times. I'm sure if I went back and bought some TDKs I would probably see good ones there too. That was just one container that should have never been sold. You should see those work out. The ones I saw with track info on them were probably a test bunch taken from a batch that somehow got shipped out.
