when i shut down my computer there are so many 'end now' pop ups. so it takes a while to end all of them and finally shut down my computer. does anyone kno how i can limit these and just end them all to make the shut down smoother because currently i have to sit there and press enter to end each one that pops up to make my computer shut down faster.

It sounds like you are a little "overloaded" with startups! The one tool Microsoft had the "smarts" to include along with Windows is the MSConfig utility you can choose the selective startup to manually check or uncheck what will automatically load along with Windows itself.

To start the utility simply scroll down from the Start button on the Start menu to the Run prompt and type in "msconfig" without quotes and press the enter key. A rectangular screen will appear with several sections one under each tab. The last on the right side is the startup group to be concerned with since that lists the softwares and things needed for video and sound and even programmanle mice and keyboards.

You simply uncheck any items you find you don't needed loaded everytime Windows starts up. The primary purpose for the msconfig utility was for troubleshooting Windows while still seeing some other benefits like freeing up resources. Gamers love that!

yea i kno that trick and to tell u the truth there isnt that many programs. i did this already b4 and yea. i rechecked and theres about only 20 processes on startup and looks like i need most of them too. lol. all my utilities. start up isnt an issue, its the shutting down part.

some of the pop ups consist of ending stuff like shellhidden icon er somin, and .net stuff. and ideas on that?

but yea i did uncheck some stuff on the startup list. we'll see how that works out.

kof2000 is referring to a small edit in the system registry. The value to look for after typing regedit at the Run prompt is HKey_LocalMachine\CurrentControlSet\Control\WaitToKillService string value found there. Often that is seen at 2000. You simply highlight that and bring down the edit menu to chosse modify. There you will see the 2000 or other figure you can lower to some degree.

how much should i lower it? does this mean that any program that is running, it will end immediately resulting in lost of data if the program is not end correctly? and mines is currently at 5000 right now.

The default installation here of XP showed 2,000. Something raised the figure on your system. Here I dropped it to 1,500 without problems seen so far. When you shut the system down while a program is active then you can easily see the loss of data. After saving work for later access and closing a program normally you shouldn't see any loss unless something effects the drive where data from any program or even Windows can be effected. One of the "big advices" often seen is "frequent backups". Other then that just shutting Windows down through the normal process won't see anything lost.
