How much would you pay for...

I have an older Alienware Area 51m laptop. I'll list specs then the problems it's having. How much would you pay for something like that. I'm thinking about selling both my laptops and buying one really nice one.

2.8 Ghz Desktop P4 (not a joke it really is a desktop processor in a notebook)
512 meg DDR PC2100
Radeon 9000 128 meg video card (will share another 128 meg from system ram)
40 gig IDE hard drive
DvD burner
15 inch (1600 X 1200 res display)

So anyway with all that the problems include: originally it came with 1 gig of ram but half went bad and is not under warranty. The dvd drive seems to be very pickey and sometimes wont read cd's. The batterys only last about 20 minutes each. The whole thing runs really hot. The keyboard has seen better days but still works fine. The entire case for the thing has seen better days but everything as of now works fine and seems stable. The hard drive is also not the origonal, when i got it there was no hard drive in it so i had to install one of my own. Anyway thats about all i can think of any imput would be greatly appreciated.
 
Whoops...I forgot to read about the problems. If it functioned perfectly, $450. With the way that it is, $350.
 
lol :( the only thing that doesn't work properly right now is the dvd drive. everything else works fine, just some stuff has "gone bad"
 
Yea, but you see when you tell somebody that kind of stuff "oh it only works half the time" the value automatically goes down by more than the actual value of the drive. It's more of a mental thing, just the realization that this doesn't all work perfectly.

You could get more listing it in your local newspaper probably than on here, where we all know oodles about computers.

Exactly.

For example, a car may be valued at $10,000, but when someone notices theres a small dent in the rear bumper, the value of the car to them automatically goes down, even though to the owner, they got so used to it that it didnt make any difference. It also effects the selling price of my LCD, since theres a small dot on the screen.
 
ah, i understand, so it might be worthwhile to just replace the drive, although i don't think i'll replace the missing ram. Also i was planning on either selling it on ebay or locally. I've been kind of sick of ebay so i'm thinking locally first
 
I would replace the drive if I were you. If you do, you should be able to sell it for much more.
 
Newegg doesn't sell any laptop CD drives, because they aren't standard, every single company has different drives, for different models, and that's why they are expensive. Actually, after a little searching, that ebay deal seems to be the cheapest.
 
oh, huh i thought they were standard and that you just had to put them in the manufacturer caddie type thing, i guess you learn something new every day, lol
 
right, well i was still thinking in terms of selling the laptop on ebay sorry i didn't make myself clear there, but for the seller, there are listing fees, ebay's commission, then if the person pays with a credit card through paypal even more is lost in that transfer because of the percent charge paypal does for that transaction. So all in all you loose quite a bit because it all adds up. and people wonder why shipping and handeling charges are always so high
