Experts: Need some Socket Advice

I'm in the market for a new mobo & cpu. I'm looking at the Core 2 Duo and the Extreme. Problem is, I don't know what SOCKET mobo they would be compatible with. Is it 775? Every PC site I search to buy a 775 lists mainly microATX mobo's for some reason so I'm thinking it may not be Socket 775. Also, it's a pain in the butt finding a 775 that has an AGP slot that isn't a micro atx.

Anyway, much help would be appreciated.

C2D is socket 775, but it must be a 965 or 975 chipset.

There is only one board that will support C2D and AGP that I am aware of, and it's a piece of junk. Why do you want AGP?
 
Yes, socket 775 is what the Core 2 Duo's use. However, not all are compatable with the Core 2 Duo's. Also, AGP is old, and I doubt you'll find any that are both compatable with Core 2's and come with AGP...
 
I have an old video card (nVidia 3DForce MX4000Twin 128MB DDR Dual VGA, 8X AGP Video Card) that I wanted to be able to use with the new mobo. Doesn't that mean i need an AGP slot?
 
Dual monitor cards are not expensive at all. For $30 you could get a PCI-Ex16 card that supports dual monitors. If you are looking into the C2D Extreme, you definitely have enough money for a new dual-monitor card.

edit: how many PCI slots do you need?
 
You do not want an AGP slot. And what do you mean almost all of them? I found only 3 out of a couple hundred. You do not want an AGP card, or an AGP motherboard. Neither one is going to be good.
 
Well when I search newegg for Intel Socket 775 boards, many in the range from 40 to 100 had an AGP slot on them. BUt I guess I shouldn't worry about that and just buy another video card.
 
No, you're seeing boards that do not support Core 2 Duo. Make sure you narrow the search down to only 965 and 975 chipsets.

And yes you should buy a new video card.

Are you building a whole new computer? If so, what is your budget and intentions?
 
Yes building a new PC. Don't really have a huge budget, only need this PC to do some basic music and photography editing. So far I've got:

M-Audio sound card
2GB DDR2 Corsair RAM
1 Terabyte (2x500) HDD
Cheapo Video Card
Sony DVD+/- RW
ATX Case

And now looking to wrap things up with a mobo and cpu. But my budget for those two combined can't exceed 250-300 area and the Core Extreme and Duo are quite expensive so looking for a budget mobo.

You can't put a really good CPU and a crap motherboard together, it all needs to be balanced.

I would definitely recommend the first one, but if you can't spend that much, the second one is good too.
 
I have a 775 with AGP, and it does support C2D with 1066. But it is mainly for folding@home and downloading use only.

I have a Celeron D stuck in there lol
