Help! Temperatures.

Hey, I just built my new PC and the BIOS says it's running at 74 Celcius or 165 Fairenheight and I know that's WAY to high. Is there any way to fix this or a program that will give me a more accurate reading?

C2D E660
Radeon X850XT 256mb PCI-E Sapphire Edition
Rosewill 500W PSU
Abit AW9D Mobo
WD 74GB 10,000 RPM HDD
OCZ Gold Edition 1GB DDR2 800 Ram

You can't get much more accurate than the BIOS reading. Are you use the heatsync is proporly set on the processor? Is it the original or an aftermarket HSF
 
If you are using the heatsink that came with the processor, make sure that the clips thingys are pushed all the way through with the black wedge between each clip is full extended. You have to put in quite a bit of effort to push them all the way in. My recommendation, if you are using the heatsink that came with processor, is to invest some money in a better heatsink that screws in, rather than clip in. It'll be a lot easier to install it in the future if you ever need to remove it......

I just worked on my friend's C2D and those heatsinks are a b**** to put in.....

Edit: Dumb question: Did you put thermal grease on?
 
:P About a week ago after building my first PC I had the same problem (or similar) When installing the Heatsink after ofcourse cleaning it a little, I touched the already there paste and got smudged. I didnt mind/think about it so I put it in anyway. I turned my comp on and downloaded speedfan and pcwizard. My E6600 Read at about 71C Idle and about 81C when opening a game. ----- The next day after suffering I went and got some nice Artic Silver 5 I completly cleaned off the surface with 91% alcohol (after going to store) and once again applied a nice, even, thin cover to both HS and CPU. Temps went down to about 30C Idle.

POINT....

The HS/F Thermal Paste might be bad :P Replace it with a nice Artic Silver 5 after cleaning the surface very well.

The HS/F might be set up wrong. The clips are really stupid and dont want to get put in :D Make sure all the Clips *CLICK* after you are almost sure its on try to pull on it a little on each side and if it moves its not correctly place and try it again.

1 Fan going down, 1 going right, and 1 going left all 80mm i think.

uhmm whats thermal grease and thermal paste? I suppose I didn't put any on.

Arctic Silver 5 is thermal paste. Its a heat conductor that transfers heat from the CPU to the Heatsink by filling in the gaps between them helping the heat move. There are other brands and some are easier to apply than AS5.
 
just double checked my heatsink and 1 of the things wase lose so i took it out and put it back in and its all good and wont move but now my CPU is reading 80 degrees celcius.. my GPU is going at 35 so it must be something with the heatsink?
 
Okay so I went out and bought Thermal Grease and got the Idle temp down to 65ºC, is there anything else I can do other than buying a new fan/hs to lower the temp?

Did you clean the surface of the Heat Sink before applying the new Thermal Grease????

Make sure you clean it with... Alcohol works best. 90% or above is the best also before applying the new grease. That happened to me, clean the surface very very well and dry then apply a thin layer of even grease.
 
Probably the most common cause for excessive heat is that you didnt secure the heatsink properly, so it's not contacting the CPU as much as it should be.
 
My guess is that you out the heatsink with the pre-applied paste on and in combination with the loose heatsink gave you those high temps....

I still recommend getting another heatsink but if not, just clean the old paste completely off then, on another computer, look up how to apply thermal paste correctly along with pictures, then reapply it and then carefully seat the heatsink back...........
