Slow PC (2GB and Pentium 4 2.60 GHZ)

Hey everyone.

Last night my computer was acting slow (as usual) and it started to go really really slow. I did the speed fan and everything was higher than the last one.

Temp 1: 54C (there was a red flame that meant it was too high)
Temp 2: 40-45 C (normal)
Temp 3: at one point went to 60C and had a flame next to it.

So yes i think half the reason could be bad cooling.

Is there anything i can do about the cooling? Like have a normal room fan on it?

ok hey everyone.

Bumping this thread - and i did some work on my PC.

I opened it up to look for dust and check everything was working. On both of the fans, the dust was clogged. Everywhere it was, covering the fans. I completely cleaned them so no more dust :).

So i thought it would work... still as slow. Well a little bit faster, and the temperatures didnt go over 60C.

I thought about taking 1GB out and leaving the remaining 1GB in. Did this and it was the same. Tiny bit slower so the 2GB is regonized.

The other 1GB is now back in, meaning i have 2GB still in my computer. But i really dont know what to do now. I checked for dust and cleaned it and i tried taking out 1Gb but nothing worked. Can someone really recomend something big to help me?

Thanks.

Jack

i think the Pentium 4 is just running outta juice for all the video editing stuff you do, because that is really intensive and the GPU might actually be slowing you down. I have a P4 currently and its fine, but video editing I know would kill it. A new dual core budget computer might be the cure

that might be the problem but editing isnt the only thing i do on my PC like i do my website and some other websites (and i dont go on the internet on that PC cause i cant, i am on the family pc now). Like when i run media player, that sometimes when i click a song, freezes and starts skipping etc :(

again, its your CPU, same with mine i have a P4 with 1 GB of RAM and I go fine, although its still slow by todays standards. so it might be your P4 is dead

His CPU would be fine for internet and music stuff. It shouldn't be slowing down there. Although in video editing thats probably understandable. Post your full system's specs.

I know tis is very late, but when you do something, in your task manager, is your CPU under a heap of strain? or is it coping, this will give u the answer to whats getting screweed under pressure. I suggest a Clean Reformat. Onlything to get your computer running back welll...

is this a ht processor or non ht? it will make a diferent regardless if you hae 2gb or not.

No his CPU is not an HT because it doesn't say that it can run two threads

An HT cpu should be able to run 2 threads, like the one I have

Hi, sorry for not replying.

So my PC is non ht? I dont really know what this would mean though lol. And you said a HT pc can run 2 threads, and mine is doing that so is that wrong?

My PC specs are

Dabs Value PC
Intel Pentium 4 2.66GHz
80GB Internal HD
2GB RAM
Graphics Card i dont know, and when i had roxio it says i didnt have a good enough one to run DVD maker...
CD Ram, R/RW
DVD Ram

External 320 GB Harddrive (Iomega)
External 20 GB Harddrive (Iomega)
External DVD R/RW +/- (MULTI FULL DRIVE) With AV slots

As far as i know, this is it, i have a microphone also in.

So is there anything wrong with it? I took out a 1GB once and nothing happened (it was slow). Also i dont have internet on this PC and also playing music is slow and freezes sometimes. ALSO when i went onto the internet to register my Windows internet was slow :(. I think the fact of having a bad Pentium 4 might be it.

I might be getting a new PC soon, but dont want to spend MORE money on one and have to sell again and again. I had a laptop and it broke so i got a PC and the 2GB and some more stuff. Lol i have been sending things in and out all the time recently for my PC.

The last time i formatted my PC fully, it ran really fast at the start and then when i put Roxio on it was really slow. So i took Roxio off and it was still slow. So maybe that is it?

Please Help.

Ok

So I’ve been reading this thread and so far we have ruled out:

Temps
Virus etc (as you don’t have the internet) and you seem to have done many scans

Can you post up your CPU Idling %?

(Just make sure you have nothing open and then Ctrl Alt Del, Then Click on the Applications tab in Windows Task Manager, at the bottom of the window it will state your CPU usage % which is updated every few seconds. post the approx average.

While your there go in to the Processes tab and note how many process there are (you really want it under 40). Ignoring the System idle process see which one has the highest value.

Hey why not just do a screen shot.

Edit: unless your Hardware isn't operating as it should then I can’t see why you should suffer any "slowness", My Computer is worse than yours:
Celeron D 2.4Ghz (P4 are better even at lower Hz)
1 GB of RAM

The only Hardware that could be letting you down is the Graphics processing Unit (I wont say card as you most likely have an integrated GPU therefore it is not upgradeable.

If you could find out what it is that would be great.

Simply quick way is to:
Click Start/Run/ type "dxdiag" (with out "")/ then click on the Display Tab. Print scren if you like or just type up the name.

Hey man,

I have done those things and whilst watching my CPU, i moved my house around and it kept going up etc...

Sorry, I didn't read through the entire post, so this may have already been noted, but shouldn't you have a decent graphics card to run movie editing software without slowdown?

No wonder your PC is goin slow man, your running top quality programs without a good GPU, a good GPU will make your computer go quicker,

Could the problem be with his Hard Drive? My pc started running slow when my 7 1/2 year old HDD began declining just recently. I bought a Raptor and just put it in and will install XP pro fresh in a few minutes and post my initial results later.
