building simple computer

I have a friend who is retired and only needs a computer for web access, e-mail and writing small documents on word. The OS doesn't matter (98 would be fine). What would be the best hardware/software options for such a build.

hp are quite good imo.....had mine for nearly 3 years now and still going strong.

HP or Compaq do make decent machines...much higher quality than Dell's. You could also build one for about that price if you'd like.

Instead of those cases and PSU, go with this case. It includes a PSU that is better than either the Rosewill or Thermaltake, and saves a bit of money.

128mb of ram? I know it's a cheap machine, but atleast 512mb.

Remember that you want it to be able to do easy tasks in the future not just easy tasks today. Future easy tasks will be more demanding.

Value Select is a pain but it might work
