Upgrade question

I'm upgrading my motherboard, CPU, memory and video card. Can I still use my current hard drive without wiping it and reinsatlling the OS? I was thinking the only change would be to the video card drivers.

Thanks for the help.

Briley.

i dont think so because your OS iss configured to your old motherboard's BIOS, but I am not so positive about this.

does anyone else know this?

No, you will have to clear the hard drive and reinstall your operating system. Like joeswm8 said your operating system is configured for you old motherboard.

Well it is possible that it will work without reinstalling xp but most of the time your gonna have to clear the hard drive and reinstall it.

wait, it works sometimes, and not others.. theres a definate yes or no, and I kinda want to know exactly.

i kinda hijacked this thread lol, but it helps the thread starter out

but when you totally wipe everything off your HDD and start from total scratch, you reinstall a new copy of XP and you go to desktop, but there are absolutely no programs on it at all, correct?

If the motherboard chipset is identical it should work. In most other cases it will not. You can get around a complete reinstall, though, by running a Repair Reinstall. This will not cause you to lose data.

When you boot to the XP cd dont pick the first repair option, just click enter. When it gets to this screen pick repair

yeah me too, thats great for getting rid of viruses and having a fresh new computer. so it keeps all the data, correct? and all you do is stick the XP CD in your drive and click repair?
