Help with PCI

hi im going to be buying the newest abit board when it comes out for its ocing capabilities, and no i dont want the 680 i, anyway is there any way that anyone knows of how to get more PCI ports on your board or buy an expander or something?:confused:
 
I can imagine that model board only comes with two not three or more pci slots. One place that carries I/O expansion cards is seen at http://www.startech.com/Product/Category.aspx?WCID=211&WCLID=40&MLID=7&menu=1&c=US

For simply being able to add devices other then video, sound, tv tuner pci type cards you can also opt to install an expansion card to add additional usb ports through the pci bus. If You plan on using various pci devices like those other then just a sound card instead of onboard and a tv card you want to reconsider a model that offers three or more pci slots.

Generally expansion adapter cards are good for temporary use and not really the best for long term application. Abit and DFI alike always seem to lag behind other brands like Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI in that regard.
 
Why do you need more PCI slots? Most Abit boards are large and have about 4 PCI slots, amoung the other PCI-Express and what not. The board will also have USB, Sound, networking, etc etc all on board. What more would you be adding?
 
well the last time i checked, ( 2 weeks ago)IN9 32X MAX WI-FI mobo only had 2 pci x16 slots and 2 pci, apparently now it has 3 pci x16 and 2 pci, im using SLI graphics, + a pci wireless card, + pci creative 7.1 surround sound gamer card, so now i hav 1 pci 16 left

If your mobo has built in WiFi, as indicated by the "WI-FI" part of the mobo name, you don't need a pci wireless card as well. That's like saying "the department of redundancy department."

uh note on that, it COMES with a PCI wifi adapter, but its only 54 mbps, but im upgrading to N soon so it wont be much help, anyway, does anyone know how to put more pci slots on a mobo???

Just wondering...why? It's not like you'll see any difference. Your internet is still much slower...

That means it'll use your spare PCI-E slot, not your PCI slot.

You are not going to be able to directly add pci slots to any board since the board is designed to specifically use the ones already on it. The only option for pci is to add in an adapter which would have more of a tendency to slow things due to the increase of power drawn from the bus.

Connection speeds are determined by the method used to connect online more then anything else. Going with dsl or cable is still going to make a dialup connection look like it's standing still no matter what addons you try.

Ok. Say you have an 8MBps connection. You have an 11MBps WiFi adapter. The internet still doesnt use up all the adapter's bandwidth. The only reason for faster WiFi is for home/office networks, with file sharing in between computers not over the internet. Changing from Wireless G to N will make no difference.

ok say you hav a 300 mbps connection, wouldnt a 300mbps adapter go faster than a 54mbps adapter?
 
If you had a 300MBps connection, yes. But you dont have a 300MBps internet connection. So it isnt a big deal.
 
The max on dialup connections themselves is currently 56k. A dsl connection can vary between some 368 and 512k there. T1 lines for commercial applications and of course cable are even faster. But even with a 1gbps connection you are limited by the hardwares you use and the servers you log onto.

Some dialup ISPs offer(or at least claim) hi-speed connections while only being connected over the average phone line. That's mainly due to first connecting to one of their own higher speed servers for the additional bandwidth. But that won't help you download from a server running at 14kbps any faster.

That wasn't the point there. When you start wondering why things aren't going as fast as always there will be common explainations like slower servers on some site where you can only download a file "at their speed" not your's. Your own ISP's servers will often slowup at times due to the voume of traffic at certain times of the day or night.

That's VERY highly improbably. You're saying you're about to buy a T1 or T3 connection, which cost upwards of $7,500 per month??

I think you're mistaking the router for the internet connection. The router is what you wireless connect to...the thing that plugs into your DSL or Cable Modem. My cable connection right now is about 7150kbps...about 0.87 MB/s, or about 7mbps...my router connection can handle 54mbps. There's 47mbps of nothing...."spare" space. You're thinking that if you go out and buy a fancy new Draft-N router for several hundred dollars, your internet connection will magically speed up. The router can only transmit at the speed of your internet.

go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and tell me the results for your download test.
