RAM Question

I've got a Gigabyte Mobo that allows for dual channel memory and I currently have two sticks of 512 running in single channel. Every time that I try to put the two into a dual channel situation, it makes the system very unstable and anytime I actually make it work I get the Blue screen of death.

The mobo has 4 slots, that can be split 2+2 for running dual channel. So what I want to know is, if I put in another stick of 1GB, should it cause any kind of problems? And if I have 3 sticks in there, will part of it want to work in dual channel and the other not? Or should it all run in single channel?

you can either run dual channel or not period. Also, if you are using over clocked or different brands of ram they may be incompatible so to speak and that is why dual channel mode doesn't work (or at least doesn't run stable).

When you take your system out of duel channel, do you remove a stick or change some setting in the BIOS? It's not that uncommon for RAM to be bad, so if you're just removing a stick, try the other one and see if you get errors.

As for duel channel, you must run in pairs. If you have 3 sticks, you'll run in single channel mode.

You may actually have a bad stick as The Other One suggested then. Either run memtest or try what The Other One suggested. I've had bad RAM that only errored out if I left the system off for extended periods, it confused me for a long time.

Nothing is being overclocked and I haven't tried memtest yet, but when the system is run in single channel, its damn near bullet proof so I wouldn't be looking at bad stick of memory.

1) Anything is possible, I have seen cases short out motherboards. That is really rare though.

2) Just because it runs solid does not mean that the ram is 100%, ther other possibility is a crappy OS problem, or motherboard, and very possible but extremely rare processor.

You gotta start with process of elimination, even if it does pass memtestx86 it does not give 100% that it is good.

I seemed to have found a solution that works in Dual Channel. The Mobo wanted to run the memory at 667 Mhz, which it is rated for, but I turned it down and I haven't had a problem yet. So here's hoping that it stays the way it is.
