Core, Pentium or Athlon

I can't decide which procesor to get.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775

Intel Pentium 4 541 Prescott 3.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 (65W) Windsor 2.0GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2

I will be using it with 1gb memory, but just the video card in the mobo.
I won't be using it for high performance gaming, or gaming at all.
I will be using it with programs like Photoshop and music mixers.

And for 40 bucks more, the Core 2 Duo will beat them in every test. If you really have to be on a budget, the the Athlon 64 is your next choice.

I do not want to spend $200 on a processor.
I am trying to get a good processor for $150

The E6300 for around $180-$190 is worth the price difference. First of all, it's a dual-core, unlike the P4, and second, it outperforms the P4 and X2 by a landslide in every real-word app.

In which cases would X2 outperform C2d?

I read in earlier threads that AMD's direction should always defeat Intel's in the gaming field. Was that untrue?

It was true prior to the release of the Core 2 Duo, which outperforms the AMD CPUs in all areas.

If the E6300 is a little expensive, the E4300 is due to be released soon at a lower price.

Back when it was the Netburst architecture (P4, PD), the A64 series was the best for gaming. But now that Intel has the Core 2 Duo, they outperform AMD's CPU's by a landslide.

hmm... I wouldnt call the difference in gaming THAT big tough. ( landside. i mean)

If you compared the X2 3800, A54 3000+ to the E6300, there's a great difference :)

For example, the E6400 over the X2 4400+ gets about the following differences in games:

30+ FPS in CoD2
20+ FPS in Quake4

and around 5-15fps difference in other games.

yea.. the 5-15fps difference would be the one too look at, since they would be the average.
and dont get me wrong.. I've played on a e6600 pc before (with a 7900GTX in it.. and tbh, i cant say i noticed a difference with my current pc in game.) ofcourse thats not fully unbiased either.. since we also have different grafic's cards in the pc.. but still )

How did the P4 get entered into this group again? The list would go as follows:

Core 2 Duo
AMD 64 X2

Pentium 4 crap.

Whatever you do, dont even consider the P4, its out of production and its crap. I had one, OCing it doesnt increase its performance much at all. And that was with almost a 1ghz OC! Whereas OCing my X2 gives me a huge increase in performance matching the top end AMD FX chips.

Core 2 Duo all the way.
