right now i have a 3500+, and i want to upgrade to either the 3800x2 (for $150 with fan and heatsink) or 4200 ($160 without fan or heatsink). Would I be better off getting the 3800 and oc'ing with its fan, or getting the 4200 and oc'ing with the 3500+ fan? i dont want to get an aftermarket fan/heatsink

The 4200, i think the 4200s have a different (better) core then the 3800s. Unless they are all windsors now. The Manchester core has problems OCing past 2.8ghz, i think the other cores can pass that though.

If you're wondering about the fan, why not just go with the retail processor? On newegg, they are typically only $10 more than the OEM ones.

As for the specs, the cores are different, but I don't know the exact differences between the two besides speed. I'm sure it's posted somewhere on the internet.

Yea, the newer cores would be better. I dont think they produce the Manchester anymore, but it really sucks to be honest. I mean, its a great cpu for the money, but its not a great OCer. But at least when you OC it you get a pretty nice performance increase unlike when i had a near 1ghz OC on my p4 and no performance increase. Hell, even at 3.5ghz my memory bandwidth WITH dual channel was around 2.9-3gb/s.

yea overclocking p4's was cool from the ghz standpoint, but from the performance standpoint it was not really much
