Q6600 vs. QX6700

Is there any physical difference between these two processors?

I mean, is there any reason you couldn't buy the cheaper Q6600 and run it at the same clock as the QX6700, or is it a completely different processor?

And also, i've seen pre-overclocked QX6700's for sale that are already clocked @ 3.2ghz.....

Any difference between these and the regular QX6700?

An example is in the flagship Dell business class computer, which comes with a factory overclocked Qx6700 running @ 3.2 and two 8800's in SLI.

So theoretically with an aftermarket cooler, i could run the Q6600 just as fast as the QX6700?

Doesn't the 6600 have the multiplier locked, tho? Is there a way to crack/bypass this?

of course you can overclock it to QX6700 speeds

i don't know if the Q6600 has it's multiplier locked or not

thanks man.

i just read some reviews on it saying it's succesfully been ran at 8x multipliers with a 500mhz FSB.

So that puts it well above the factory speed of even the QX6700 :)

Now all have to do is wait for the $300 price drop this spring, and it's mine (oh yes, it WILL be mine :) )

I'm still open for more comments. But thank you Beast.

you will have a great system in the spring, Q6600, hopefully a 8800GTX

your welcome, you made me feel all warm and tingly inside

As the best has said, the only difference is the clockspeed, and that the QX6700 has unlocked multipliers, meaning it can be overclocked much further.

Actually there is a difference, the q6600 is just a core 2 quad, however the QX6700 is a core 2 extreme quad core. The difference you ask? The QX6700 has hyper-threading while the Q6600 doesn't. Simple as that, aswell as clock speeds.

The first part is right, but the second part isnt.

The Core 2 Extremes dont have Hyper-Threading, only the Pentium Extremes.

The QX6700 only has unlocked multipliers and a higher stock clock speed, thats it.

what's the factory multiplier, tho?

because i've heard the quads overclock the best by leaving the multiplier low, and increasing the FSB......

can anyone confirm this?

The extra cash isn't a huge deal, but i'd rather not spend $1k if i don't have to....

If i could get the 6600 to 3.2ghz, that's all the faster i'd overclock either of them....

I know they can get to 4ghz, but i'm not really trying to heat my room with my computer, nor cook any of my other components in the process :)

I believe the Q6600 has a multiplier of 9, and the QX6700 has a multiplier of 10. (2.4Ghz and 2.66Ghz)

It is true that the Core 2's are capable of reaching a really high fsb, but raising the multiplier in addition really helps, as it takes strain off the motherboard and RAM from having an increased fsb.

i was gonna run it at 8x400 with watercooling, and call it a day

i don't want to push it to the point where something might go wrong, so 3.2 is enough for me

so i don't think it'd be worth the extra money for me for the unlocked multiplier

thoughts?

i've even heard of people running them 500x8, but that's more than i care to try and cool/pay an electric bill for :)

if you have water cooling then unlocked multiplier is the way to go... you can get to that speed with air anyways.

well, i was gonna run ddr2 800, so i was gonna set my FSB @ 400, and run an 8x multiplier (i should be able to drop the multiplier from 9 to 8x.

That should give me the best of both worlds.

Like i said, i have no desire to clock higher than 3.2, for reliability reasons.

What kind of water cooling kit are you getting, or are you doing a custom one??? i could help you with one if you want.

i was gonna get the CPU-only coolermaster to match my case

it's only $60

and would anyone NOT agree that with ddr2 800, reducing my multiplier to 8x, and running 400mhz FSB is the best bang for the buck?

I save tons of money compared to the qx6700, and get to fully utilize the speed of my ram.

It's a win win in my opinion.

But it's possible i'm missing something, so feel free to tear me a new one if i'm wrong :)
