Why is it so hard to buy a computer????????

Sounds like a stupid question....well....

I received a Boutique Computer that was so noisy, missy half the "feet" to stabilize it, had no drivers installed for the software that was supposed to be in there....so I sent it back.

Picked up a halfway HP at Best Buy.....and it was Plastic...and after 2 1/2 hours of it not taking my Graphics card setup, Wireless Netgear or Display CD I took it back.....

I am typing this on a machine (Dell) that is 1 year old and will not play any sounds, Outlook, Outlook Express and Mozilla Thunderbird cannot download e-mail...they can send it but not download any and a lot of the software is corrupted.

Is there a computer to purchase that has some Ram, a Video card not integrated and is built to work?

I need some suggestions please as I am driving my self crazy.

Thank you

Elliot

How much are you willing to spend? If you were to pick out the parts/give me a price cap, I would build it for a minimal fee.

Thank you

HI,

Thank you for answering.....The Velocity Micro was $2300 and the HP was $1050.

I was hoping to be able to get a machine where I have some support and warranty which is why I haven't asked for a machine to be built as I am in Texas.

I know the parts would all be better (retail) but it just scares me a bit.

It is much cheaper to build yourself/have it built for you...usually if you have problems with something you can take it to a local computer shop (not Circuit City or Best Buy, etc) and they'll usually run some diagnostic things for free, especially if you had it built there. And the parts come with a warranty...it's just that if something does go wrong, you need to call the maker of the component that is faulty, rather than the maker of the computer.

Hello,

Just as PohTayToez offered, I could build you a computer and ship it to you if you would have liked, I don't charge Labor and I, unlike dell or HP, run FULL stress tests too ALL of the systems I build for 48 hours straight to test for stability and overheating... and plus I'm A+ and Net+ Certified. PLUS I give warranty options and 24/7 phone technical support with Remote assistance :)

Almost all of the software problems you've mentioned can be fixed easily, maybe with a reformat. But yeah, I hate pre-built PC's. You never know what cheap parts they use.

the problem is not with the computer, its with the user.

Whats that supposed to mean?

He's had a spot of bad luck with computer he's bought, hows it his fault!?

I recomend you get somebody like Core2Conroe to build one for you, it is a lot cheaper to buy the stuff seperate and you know what exactly is going in it :)

Computer problems

Thank you all for some great input.....yes, the custom build does scare me like I said but it is probably a much better machine. Every time I had a "PC-Doctor house call" they were here for 2 hours and nothing was ever fixed.

As for "it's the user":

I ordered the Velocity Micro......2.4 Core Duo, 4gigs Ram....Upgraded to quiet fan P/S, 512 Nvidea 7900GT Video card and all the bells and whistles.

The machine was so noisy that I could take it only for 1 hour.....I ordered it as a performance business machine that I could also post process digital camera pictures for my website products which is why I went for the high end video card....the Ram although windows only saw 3 gigs was overkill but I wanted a machine that would perform.

The build was sloppy to say the least......For that much money on a business machine....I should have been able to start it up, personalize, add software and never think of it again as I back up my machines everynight with retrospect, Have System Mechanic and Registry repair Pro.....I automatically defrag every week.

Now you will laugh....everday I have Outlook, 2 I.E. windows, Quickbooks, an order process program and 1 excel spreadsheet......that is how I use the machine......yes it was overkill but I wanted performance and this machine was no faster than my IBM laptop.

But my Dell is dying after a year and the HP was all plastic....and someone wrote to me to say it is not the machne but the user.....I think of it as a car you start it up and go....if I have to think about it, I am not thinking about my business.

Thank you

Elliot

like proper cable management, GOOD fans, Good lighting if you want it, FULL stress test so if something is gonna mess up then it will happen in my hands before you lose all of your data, hell, I even do case modding if you want it done, lol

what bad luck? I did not follow the whole thread, but from the first post of his, he did not know how to run a software and problem with a computer being *plastic* and "noisy".
sorry about this, but my fiancee is exactly like this. she's always complaining how the program wont work (because I have double clicking on my computer and disabled the single click) and how the the CD is noisy (when burning discs) and how the computer is so damn hot (after having it sitting on her lap for two hours and covered with her clothes!!!!).

I think building my own is out of the question as I need to spend my time running 9 internet e-commerce sites.....and it is hard to work with someone I don't even know or where they are.

If I was to put it together and hit the power button and there were problems, it is time that I cannot afford to lose....considering the time I lost with Velocity Micro and HP and Dell.

Right now, the DELL is the hub of the network and I can't even use a Jump Drive to move data around.....none of the other computers can see the network anymore as this machine has so many inherant problems....Bad USB ports, problems running software that no program can fix (spyware, defrag, virus, Registry repair, PC Doctor etc) The time it has cost is unimaginable......2 employess had toleave early on Thursday and out Friday as they could not get the e-mail downloaded to process but we could send e-mail....and NO SETTINGS HAD changed.

I installed Mozilla Thunderbird and that did not work in addition to Outlook and Outlook express....I am now printing orders out of my IBM Thinkpad and then moving the printers around to the other machines for printing everything else.....

I have learned from a $1000 HP, to a $2000 Dell to a $2400 VM...all I have lost is time, money and lack of production.

This is a sad state of the computer industry if a person cannot get a decent computer to work everyday without having a full time IT staff. I feel for the people who walk into a store and buy a Plug and Play off the shelf.....it has to be a nightmare.

I feel your pain, and I know what kind of crap you can be going through when time is money. Maybe consider getting a elcheapo computer. I myself have been on a tight budget when it comes to computers and have always bought the $500 e-machine deals printer/monitor combos, never have any problems runs good. Although it will lack in gaming, and 3d work. I can run PhotoShop, Corel Draw, things like that no worries, I am sure they could run smoother with a better system, this has always seemed to work for me. Not to mention the money you save. It is a compromise, as I cant play a lot of the games I want to, but it works, and that’s what counts. I am shooting for my next system to be custom/home built.

On a side note, I know you said that you do have registry cleaners and do keep up on your computers, which is good, but maybe your missing something, like the guy who always changed his oil (we are talking cars now) but never the spark plugs, after a while it quit starting.

E-machines

Good input, thank you

I do not know e-machines.....I always thought that they were a beginners machine for e-mail and solitaire....LOL

When you spoke about the "oil change"...and you are aware of the programs that I run.....about 6 different programs.....are you speaking of the "spark plugs" as being a bad power supply, bad this or bad that and it sets off a chain of bad happenings..

You don't want a flimsy plastic case do you?
Noisy, what if there were 3 30DB fans in there and the PSU...
