ok so today i bought vista premium home upgrade, so i wanted to completly format everything and install absolutely fresh, but u r not allowed you must install via ur present xp desktop but even the clean install leaves files all over the place, is there any way i can format and do a complete new fresh install of vista on my machine?

if you bought the upgrade version (rather than the retail or the OEM version) you can only install it on top of the present OS. You cannot do a clean reformat + install with the upgrade version.

At least that was my impression. Someone correct me on that if I'm wrong.

put the cd in the drive. restart and go into your bios and boot from cd

You cant. if you bought the upgrade version you must install it over a previous OS, you cant format the drive and then install it.

you can perform a clean install of vista without xp but its a pain:

basically you install vista without entering the cd key (leave it black) and format your drive. This will install the trial version. Then you re-install vista over your first install and enter you key in the second time.

Microsoft should do this kind of the stuff to their customers and hoestly its why i won't ever buy windows. They can keep their activations and restrictions.

When you reinstall the second time you pick custom install and it gives the option to parition and format

sorry is this when you reinstall the second time as in ive upgraded from xp now im on vista but just install it again you mean??

i mean i chose custom anyway and then deleted the windows.old folder containing the xp stuff so does that mean i have a pretty clean install now?

This is for a blank drive, no OS

Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and start the setup program
When prompted to enter your product key, DO NOT enter it. Click "Next" and proceed with setup. This will install Windows Vista as a 30-day trial.
When prompted, select the edition of Vista which you have purchased and continue with setup.
Once setup has been completed and you have been brought to the desktop for the first time, run the install program from within Windows Vista.
This time, type in your product key when prompted.
  1. When asked whether to perform an Upgrade or Custom (advanced) install, choose Custom (advanced) to perform a clean install of Vista. Yes, this means that you will have to install Vista for a second time.
  2. Once setup has completed for the second time, you should be able to activate Windows Vista normally. You can also delete the Windows.old directory which contains information from the first Vista install.
