slow internet speed with laptop

Hi, I have an old Vaio PCG-R505TFP. With this laptop, the internet download speed is about 500-600kbps. However, with the exact same internet connection, my desktop has a download speed about 2mbps. Anyone know why the speed in so slow with the laptop? Thank you.

I just want to confirm that you are not using wireless connectivity off the Sony. Because the 802.11b card connectivity is greatly influenced by distance, objects, etc.

Are you connecting through the 10/100 on both machines?

What are the specifications differences of the desktop and notebook?

Hi LPH, thanks for the response.

I am not using a wireless connection.
I am using a wired ADSL line which is connected to a modem then to my computers via a 100/10 ethernet cable.

The desktop is a dell and has has P4 3 GHz processor, 2G of RAM

the laptop only has P3 1.2 GHz processor, 256K of RAM

Do you need moe specifics on the computers?

BTW, the local area connection icon on the laptopshows 10 mbps while the desktop ahows 100 mbps.

that usually reffers to the speed at which the internet modem inside the computer will operate at, so your desktop is able to accept data travelling at speeds in the neighbourhood of 100mega-bytes-per-second

Mbps is one megabit per second. Communications speeds are usually measured in bits per second while many computer operations are measured in bytes per second.
