I am ready to buy a new laptop and I have narrowed it down to 4 choices. I am going to be going to college this fall and I want to get the best bang for my buck. All these laptops are in the $1600 range. They all have a 15.4" screen, Windows Home Premium, Office 2007 Home and Student Edition, Intel Core 2 Duo T7200, 80GB HDD (5400rpm or 7200rpm), 2GB DDR2 RAM (533MHz or 677MHz), DVD SuperDrives, Bluetooth and some sort of internal wireless card. Here are the choices with their more specifics;

DELL Inspiron E1505
UltraSharp SXGA+ Display with TrueLife
533MHz RAM
5400rpm HDD
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 HyperMemory

Toshiba Satellite A130
XGA TruBrite
677MHz RAM
5400rpm HDD
nVidia GeForce Go 7600 with 256MB Dedicated
harmon/kardon speakers

Gateway NX570XL
WSXGA+ TFT Active Matrix
677MHz RAM
7200rpm HDD
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 HyperMemory
Integrated Intel 802.11n wireless card

hp Pavilion dv6000t
WXGA BrightView
5400rpm HDD
256MB nVidia GeForce Go 7400
HP Imprint + Microphone + Webcam

I would like to thank everyone in participating in advanced.

i had an inspiron 6000 from dell and my sister has a toshiba... i found with my inspiron it had a durability factor.... wasnt as solid and things just started to become shaky after a few months.. things started to feel loose.. then i minor push on the back of the lcd caused it to crack.. I MEAN MINOR!

my sister's toshiba... i found it was put together about the same as my inspiron and started showing the same signs of wear after a few months...

i later purchased a HP Pavilion dv6000 after my girlfriend had a pavilion for over a year with PRACTICALLY no signs of wear.. and she used it just as much if not more for school...

i just personally found that the HP Pavilion's where more durable than inspirons and toshiba notebooks... just a personal first hand experience. I can not comment on the gateway, since i have no personal experience with these notebooks.

Performance wise, I would go with the Gateway.

Besides durabililty:

(1) consider the weight of the notebooks

(2) consider the quality of audio (recording lectures in OneNote is very valuable)

(3) consider the warranty periods.

Best of luck in your decision.

I would spend a little more money over the Dell E1505 and go with the HP DV6000T.

Take it from me, someone that is hardcore Dell as you can see by my signature.

although you have the budget advantage with the Dell, if you can, put in the extra money for the HP.

they are GORGEOUS (but what is the native resolution for the one you've chosen? the dell screens are gorgeous with the uwxga) notebooks with nice build.

with my e1505, you can clearly see why it costs so cheap. Its a nice and sturdy notebook, but it creaks a lot and everything is cheap plastic. everything can be moved with a little force in the E1505. I can seperate the lcd screen from the housing just by pulling the housing away. That's not comfortable in the back of my mind.

gladly, my M1210 is freaking AWESOME. It's got a wonderful build quality. Beats Apple. Yes, I said it. It sure as hell does.

You didnt tell us what processor is in either one... But I'd say #1 or #2 would be the best if your looking for reliability and decent gaming performance.

here is an ASUS with a 15.4in screen like you stated. Uncertain if you wanted a 15.4in or not. Here is one with exceptional performance for the price.

I really want to have the 2GB of RAM.

They all have a Intel Core 2 Duo T7200.

Sirius_GTO, actually the hp is about $100 less than the DELL.

well put another gig into that 15.4 asus.
look at the memory spec when it arives or call newegg.
another gig will give you 2 gigs.

by the way dell 1505 is pure junk. very very flimsy makes squicky noises etc.
dell really went down in quality, while hp went up.
sinse you are so ignorant and don't want to get the best laptop for the price, aka asus(which has 0 dead pixel guarantee, 2 year waranty)
get HP.
just to remind you if you buy HP or dell and your screen has 5 dead pixels they won't replace it. if you have 6 or more they will.
asus will replace your screen if you have 1 dead or stuck pixel.

your question is like: who is the best musitian
1) britney
2) jessica
3) jenifer lopez

I hope it's obvious that none of those fastfood pop stars are.

it really breaks my heart when people have 1300 for a laptop and buy junk when they can buy
one of the best laptops out there, but they choose pop brand.

Totally agree on this one... my experiences with the inspirons where bad. They felt cheap, handled cheap, and after time they showed up to be cheap.(With signs of wear) On the other hand, HPs stayed solid through the same about of wear.

Dell has affordable prices and good customer support, toshiba is well known for be reliable and has also good prices and gateway and hp I don't know so much

Must have been a fluke, because me and my friend have E1505's for almost a year and they work great. I get an average of 4-6 hours from the battery, it has survived a few falls, feels durable, and looks great.

That's my exact point. although the make a lot of noise and feel cheap, it's actually a very sturdy rough laptop.

btw, you need to be more careful. How the heck did you manage several drops?

good thing i've never dropped any of my laptops before.

They werent any kind of major drop, just like when i was taking it out of my laptop bag and the corner fell a few inches onto my desk, nothing major.

But I love my laptop, plays all my games very well :)
