AMD FX-60 2.60 GHz, where does it rate?

I am thinking about buying the barebone kit below, which comes with the 2.6 GHz FX-60 by AMD. I am wondering how it rates in the gaming world. I want to build a computer that will be running new games for the next two years, as my current one has. My current setup is an AMD Athalon 3000+ (2.1 GHz), ATI Radeon 9550 256MB, and 1GB DDR RAM. It has served me well running the latest high end games for me, but with Test Drive Unlimited coming out, and my computer failing horrifically at running the demo with any kind of smoothness, it's time for something new. I feel like the jump from 2.1 to 2.6 GHz isn't very much, but being a dual core I assume it will serve me well for another couple of years. Any suggestions or opinions about this or other comperable or better processors are welcomed.

It's the top of the FX line for Socket 939 model boards plus being the only dual core model in the AMD FX series until going into the Socket AM2 line of cpus. At the present moment the Intel Core Duos and extremes are the rave of the gaming world while you are stuck with the AMD fan here. I'm currently waiting for the FX-60 or Opteron 185 to finally drop in price... someday???

The current best in the AMD line is the FX-62 AM2 model if you are planning to stay strictly with AMD. I'm surrently stuck with the AMD64 3500+ Atholon single core model in a rather budget started build to replace the old case with the ATI Radeon 9550 256mb AGP model used in that build. Presently running 2gb of Kinston Value Ram has worked out quite well with the lower end Radeon X1300 Pro with games like Prey, Fear, Half Life 2, and others.
 
Thanks. I was going to just upgrade my current computer, but I wasn't going to spend money on a new motherboard just to be able to use a PCI-E card (AGP currently, damn you HP and your crappy motherboards). So, I decided to go with that, and a processor, and that led to a deep, dark , black, money sucking, hole that is a new computer build. I can't wait.
 
But I wasn't looking a new build or board deal when pricing lately. I was after three items primarily namely what would turn out to be the best price that included a WD 500gb sata drive needed. The drive was a must. The price seen at one vendor at a pc fair was lower separately but... Those deals are mainly bundles where you buy more items. Once you see a good deal on a board+cpu you usually buy what? supply, case, monitor, keyboard, mouse, video and sound cards, maybe tv tuner, and the list goes on.
 
If he's going to buy an FX-60 anyway, he might as well get the combo (which is cheaper than just the CPU), and sell/give away/throw away the board - he's still saving money.
 
If you want the best bang for your buck I would go with a core2duo.

That's a hard choice (between FX-60 and a Core 2 Duo). While the FX is a great value, you are going to get an old socket with it. That means DDR instead of DDR2. When you want to upgrade from the FX-60, you will have to buy a new motherboard, processor and ram...again. That is a big plus for Core 2 Duo right now.
 
Its no better then a $200 cheaper X2 5000+.

Save lots of money and just get an X2 at equal speed and it will perform the same, they are the same cpus.

Wait a second! Tell me where! Lets see: Take $200 off of $309, =$109 for a motherboard and processor? Tell me! I've been needing an upgrade...

What in the hell? When did the X2s become more expensive then the FXs? A few weeks ago the FX-62 was over $500, now its $425 and the X2 5600 that was about $300 is now $500! WTF? My X2 was only $140 and it can OC to outperfom both lol.

In either case alot cheaper to buy an X2 and just OC it to match the FX speeds will be the same thing.
 
You will want an X2 when if you plan to run Vista for sure. I have to agree with ceewi1 on tossing the (crap)board to save on the cost of the FX-60 model. The prices actually started climbing at newegg rather then going down on the same model! :eek: This started in the last few weeks there. Meanwhile it's TigerDirect's turn to have some deals going apparently.
 
Overclocking scares me. I'm just concerned that I could screw something up. Does anyone have any links to good OCing guides to get started and figure out if it's something I want to try?

How much better is the DDR2 over stadard DDR? I really like AMDs for some reason, but I suppose I'd be just as happy with the Intel.
 
OCing should! If you don't have a large budget to rush out to replace hardwares and build new cases you will want to "take your time" since ocing places heavier stresses on the hardwares involved. The OC forums are the sites many go to for help on that. One tip is backing things down first to gradually increase the cpu multiplier or fsb one step at a time until you locate that one spot where everything remains stable. Otherwise the system will lock and you then have to clear the cmos back to factory defaults.
