Rip off or not?

Well my boss is looking at buying a computer and went to some where called Compute. I was looking at everything and it seems to be a pretty crappy machine for the price and to be a gaming computer.. The video card is alright.. Well here is it:

Case - ATX CoolMax Midtower
Keyboard Mouse Speakers Combo
Windows Vista Home Premium

Memory - DDR-2 PC2 5300 1GB (for having vista it prob needs at least 2 GB, not to mention since its to play games.. Pref. age of empires 3 I believe) The motherboard standard is DDR2 800.

Burner - DVD-RW Lightscribe
Harddrive - 80gb SATA seagate
Video - PCIe GeForce 7300GS 256MB (could go better i think)

Motherboard - ASUS M2N-MX Soc AM2 (which doesnt leave much room to expand 1PCIe x 16, 1PCIe x 1, 2PCI slots) It is capable of 4gb max.

CPU - AMD Athlon 3200 Soc. AM2 Orleans (I figured you could at least get a better processor than this, maybe a dual-core)

Modem 56k
Mousepad
One year carry in warranty.

Monitor Sceptre 17in LCD ($225.58)

Well this is the computer.. all for $1,165.92 after taxes.
Seems like another one could be built alot better, just wanted your opinions! Thanks

Sounds like a pretty bad deal... You should be able to do much better than that.

As for the comments on the RAM, don't get more RAM just to play games. 1GB would still be fine. A better video card would be a much better improvement than 2GB of RAM :P

Yes, the reason I was thinking of more ram was because of windows vista. I'll have to look for another computer. THanks

Thats a horrible deal.

For a comparison, a few months ago I built a system for around $1600 that had the following:

Core 2 Duo E6300
eVGA 680i-SLI motherboard
2GB DDR2-667
8800GTS 640MB
320GB SATAII

it also included they keyboard, mouse, drives, etc.

You might consider building your own. Newegg.com is a great place to buy components from.

Yes I really really want to build the computer for him.. I'm dying to build one for myself (except i'm in the middle of buying a house and can't afford to) but its not my computer and I'll have to see if he can front me the $1000 first lol.

I know how to build computers since my dad owned a computer repair/internet service store. I'm not saying I know everything, because I don't lol. I at least know how to put everything together. Now when it comes to how much power the video card/drives/motehrboard etc. use, I don't know how to figure in what power supply I need. Nor do I know much about processors. I've heard AMD runs cool and is good for gaming, but I also heard some of the new Intel processors are just as good.

I really want him to get a dual-core (since I never had one and want to play with it lol) so I'm going to put a computer together tonight around that price range and post it and let me know what you guys think! Thanks for the help!

A suggestion: go with a low end Intel Core 2 Duo processor like the E6300 (instead of an AMD).

Jet's right, even the 'lowly' E6300 is damn strong, it can out-fold my old Celeron by 60 times! Impressive, and while the old box ran at 100% this thing runs about 60% They also have a cool feature of saving power by turning off the fan if not needed, just don't turn on Fan Fail warrning on in the BIOS, whoops.

I'm looking at the Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz .. now how do you tell how good the processor is? Its not the frequency is it? I mean thats one thing but what about the L1&L2 cache and the FSB?

The E6400 is stonkingly good, no question about it, Clock speeds have been thrown out of the window and been run over by Intel, I don't know what we use now apart from benchmarks to look up CPU's.

Ok after looking, this is what I've put together for a computer.. it is about $100 over the budget of the last computer but I think its 3029485092845 times better lol.. let me know what you think/could change to make it cheaper/better. Do not want to go over what it is at right now. Thanks!
