Quick question

Hey,

I just upgraded from an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and with it I got a new fan (Not the standard fan you get in PIBs).

The upgrade went great and I am running it fine without any problems.

But the fan I got comes with this speed control thing that goes where a PCI slot should go. First off:

- Do I need the speed control knob thing
- What speed should I set it at because I can't be pulling out the case to change the speed at a later date

Its a Akasa AK859 fan and it runs at 2000-4000RPM

Thanks,

Tom

Heya

Well I would install it with the speed control panel and set it in such a way that the temperature/noise ratio is best for you. In particular, I would test it under stress. Then I would leave it and put it where you want to put it. This way, you would avoid having to go into the back of the PC again.

Well I tested it on the lowest setting while playing Counterstrike: Source and it stayed at about 36c. Would you say that is a good temperature or should I increase it a little?

Heya....

I would not want it to go over 40 Celsius, so yes it is fine. However, personally, I would increase the RPMs and if it is still at an acceptable noise level and decreases the temperature, I would go with that setting. Up to you :)

Thanks for the help :)

Ill monitor the temperature then make a change, if required, to the RPM in a few days.

Edit:

When I put the cover back and moved it back into my desk on I noticed the tempature of the CPU and all the other stuff went up quite a bit.. do you think I should find another location for the PC (Its in the desk at the moment.. if you get what I mean) or is it just the fact that I put the cover back on?

You might want to find another place for your computer; putting the cover back on shouldn't have done that much. Depending, of course, how much it really is. What are the temperatures now?

Well at min RPM (2000) its currently at 43c but it is in a enclosed space.

Is that idle? and what do you mean by "enclosed"? Is it fully (or almost fully) blocked in from outside cool air?

Its while playing music and doing some stuff in Adobe Photoshop. By enclosed I mean there is about 7cm each side of the case and about 3cm on top.
