The reference to Core Duo should be Core Dual the first in the Intel line of dual core models. The Pentium D is a dual line with the Core 2s being the Duo and Extreme. The E6300 on up is the Core 2 models.
Actually the first gen Core series are "Duo" also. They were used for laptops and never really came into the desktops.

I think fatbot is primarily comparing desktop models however to make a decision there for a new system. If you don't want to spend on two cpus one now one later then you go for the newer and faster generally speaking.
