Whats the difference???

Hey is there a Difference Between:

Hyper-Thredding (Intel)
and
Hyper-Transport (AMD)

Or are they just the same thing pretty much

Yes, there is a huge difference.

AMDs Hyper-Transport is its integrated memory controller inside the CPU rather then going through the northbridge, so it is more direct making memory data transport much faster and effiecent.

All Intels Hyper-Threading does is make the computer believe there is 2 cpus and allows it to act as a dual core while only having one core. I didnt find it to be very effiecent at increasing performance at all, even with multitasking, its nothing like true dual core.

Dual_Corex said it pretty well, but basically, Hyper Threading allows certain Intel processors to simulate a second core, to enhance multitasking. But since dual-core and quad-cores are out now, that technology isnt as useful.

Didnt they have Pentium Ds at the release of HT P4s?

Thank you!

So from what I understand, I should probably go with AMD and its Hyper-Transport abilities?

this is the CPU i was thinking of getting:

Well no......its not cuz AMD is better. Its just that the technology is better and much more usefull inside the chip when comparing HT to HTT. But that has little to do with overall cpu performance.

The cpu you posted is a great budget cpu. But if you can afford it, look into getting Intels Core 2 Duo, even the slowest one (i believe is 1.8ghz) would be much more faster then that AMD.

The P4's w/HT were out a long time before the Pentium D's. They had HT when we bought out family PC in either 2003 or 2004. The Pentium D's were 2005 I think, or early 06.
Thank you!

Just because it has Hyper Transport doesnt mean its better. True, it makes the newer AMD's perform better at memory intensive apps, but the Intel Core 2 Duo outperforms the Athlon 64/X2.

Could you give me some sudgestions on a Intel Core 2 Duo(s)?

Yes core 2 duos are a consideration, but considering they'd need you to upgrade your motherboard, Then RAM, then possibly your vid card It's a consideration only to be.. considered if you were willing to shell out alot $$$'s for an upgrade. So if your cheap and lazy.. like me, then stick with s939 until you have the money for a competant upgrade. :)

Good Luck!

The Pentium Ds are that new? Wow, i thought they were older then that! My P4 is from 01 i believe, i wouldnt have that it woulda been that much longer before dual cores came around. I didnt pay much attention to stuff around that time lol.

I'd go with the E6300 instead of the 4300 that you suggested. You get alot more bang for your buck and its maybe 30 or so dollars more, still within your budget range.

The AMD cpu he posted was an AM2, not 939, 939 is nearly dead now : (.

If its his first build, then the Core 2 duo would be much worth it.

yes.. the only difference between that and the 6xxx models is larger cache..It'd be great if you can afford the inevitable upgrades.. but realize if you have a s939 motherboard that CPU will not be compatible. As i said above you'd need to change the mobo, ram and possibly video card (If your stuck on agp). Do it if you have the money's by all means..

edit: didnt see the socket am2 my bad.. what i said still holds true though. c2d is not compatible with Am2

This is my second build
my current PC is a AMD 64 bit 3000+

Im building a whole new machine so I can offord the upgrade fot the Intel

I want to be able to multitask like crazy

do things such as: Play World of warcraftx2 (2 accounts at the same time)
listen to music While playing games..and other things

ahh.. i see then yeah if you already are upgrading then go c2d. LIve the dream, brudda!

Alright thanks Guys you have successfully converted me to an Intel man!
Im Going with the intel Core 2 Duo

Thanks again for all your help
