usb to sata/ide

Hello all. I bought a generic usb to sata/ide cable but I can't seem to get windows to recongize it. When I plug it in (with a hard drive attached) it says new hardware found and goes through the process of installing the driver. It won't take the drivers from the cd that came with it instead saying that c:\winnt\inf\usb.inf is a closer match. I then get an error message saying that the installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance. I have windows 2000. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thank you.

Actually, you need drivers for all OSes, but 2000+ should have them built in. I would try your adapter on an XP computer and see if it works on that, if it doesnt, then try a new one.

I plugged it into a XP media center computer and it said the device was working properly though it didn't display any mass storage or whatever it is supposed to so (though that could be the fault of the hard drive). Is there anything I can do to get it to work on the 2000 Pro machine? The XP one is a laptop and I don't always have access to it.

Thank you.
