Why choose widescreen over normal LCD?

I've been seeing a ton of widescreen LCD monitors coming out lately, and I'm trying to figure out why they are nicer than normal ones. I know the screen resolution is wider, but why not have both the height and length longer? Maybe I'm just not understanding. Thanks in advance for your help.
 
because horizontal workspace is much more useful than vertical workspace

think about looking up and down, vs. simply turning your head left and right, it's much more natural
 
Now that I think about it, that makes sense. I'm in the market for a flat screen, so I'm trying to figure out what I want. Any specific brands or specs I should be looking for?
 
how do you find out if your card supports widescreen? i have a geforce 3 ti500...will it do widescreen?
 
They probably wouldn't play on that resolution, but Windows would automatically adjust your resolution to what the game wants to use. If you had a widescreen monitor using a widescreen resolution, then if the old game needed 800x600 resolution, the game would just not use up the full screen. At least, that's what I've found to be the case in my experience.

i got it. btw, i think 1600x1050 is the widescreen resolution, not 1600x1200. can anyone confirm that?
 
Wide screen is awesome! I have a 20" and love it. Many games (like battlefield 2) are made for wide screen but games that are not WS still look normal.
 
Mine's 1680x1050, and my POS x1300 plays games on it just fine.

I can play trackmania united @ 1680x1050 on the 'faster' setting @ around 90fps.

And games look amazing in widescreen.
 
and don't forget you can turn the monitor 90 degrees (stand permitting) for reading stuff online....

I didn't think i'd like it like that, personally, but it's amazing being able to read entire threads on the forum without scrolling!

I would completely agree. I bought five of those Hanns-G 19" LCD's (not widescreen) for an organization I did some computer work for. The monitors were all amazingly bright and clear, and none of them had dead pixels. And they're only about $180 (no rebates, plus s&h)! Definitely worth checking into.

I personally don't like widescreen, it looks and feels as if you have less viewing area... I have a 19" LCD and it looks great on my desk.
