which to choose: opty 165 or athlon x2

id like to upgrade, and the opty looks much easier to attain for a 939 system, but im not sure whether or not it would be better to get an athlon x2. tell me :P
 
If you already have a 939 motherboard and are not looking to change that right now. I would say go with the athlon X2.

However, if you are willing to change motherboard (or don't yet have one) get a core 2 duo motherboard and CPU because core 2 duos are ridiculously good right now.

And if you are an AMD to the death fan, get an AM2 motherboard as the 939 socket is fading away.
 
make sure you look at your manual or watever for your motherboard it may be the same socket but it may not support it so i would make ssure
 
An opteron 165 uses the same exact core as a x2 4600/4800. The only difference is that an opteron is tested above an beyond normal testing procedure. Some people take this to mean they are execelent overclockers.. and they are. So if you wanna overclock opterons are great. otherwise go with whichever's cheaper.
 
And hell i'm tired of people saying s939 is dead, a socket cannot die it can only lose support and i can bet there are still alot of people using it at this point. And it's not like the processors just disapear as soon as they become unfaverable. I know if your upgrading you should steer people toward long term components but it doesnt seem like this guy wants to uprade his mobo ram vid card.... just his proc.. Bleh.. im just venting feel free to ignore this post.
 
Never said it was "dying" I said it was "fading away" (as in future cpus and such) Plus, I threw out 3 options 1 if he wanted to keep his mobo and 2 if he didn't. :)
 
These opterons only own the title "server cpu" in actuallity they are nothing more than a underclocked X2 4800, they are tested to high standards to make sure they are superior stability wise.. then underclocked further to insure even greater stability. That's why they are called server cpu's, because of their stability. so wouldn't it make more, not less, sense to have one in a gaming pc?
 
guess ill be going 165 or nothing at all. its kind of upsetting that as soon as the am2 3800x2 drops about $50 they also take the 939 version off the market. i would have loved to snatch a $100 3800x2

Yes, sockets can die. soak your mobo in gasoline and light a match to it and see if the socket on it dies :D

Basically when someone says something like sockets and CPUs and mobos and stuff die, it just means they are outdated and old skool. It doesnt mean they literally die. It just means they are currently obsolete and pointless to buy. Technology advances so fast it only takes a matter of 6 months to a year to make something obsolete.
 
I'm new to all this.. That's why i'm here, to learn. I know a bit, but in all seriousness most of the people on this forum could blow me away with their accumulated databanks. Ehh.. i'll learn, just give it alittle time. :)
