ORDERING TOMORROW

Not to keen on spending £160 on a graphics card, especially when 8600s are just round the corner. Can't you downgrade?
I'm planning to upgrade again in the summer, so at least for a few months i can have a top performing machine. I will either be going SLi with 2 7900GTO's or selling the 7900 and buying an 8800 of some variety. Not now though.
OCUK are doing an amazing deal on OCZ Memory, I suggest you check it out and upgrade to 2GB:

Thats like exactly double what im paying already for 1Gb.... so how that makes a good deal im not sure seeing as its going from 1Gb to 2Gb, and doubling the price, seems like a normal price to me, plus i forgot to mention im kinda on a budget

I just don't see the point spending £160 now when it is already starting to be outdated. Why don't you get a card of eBay for £100 or so?

Wow...everything's so much more expensive in the UK. :)
Yeh, sucks, but theres not a lot i can do about that

Yeah looks a nice system Dragon...will you be upgrading to 2 Gb in the sumer too?
Most probably yes, I can't see 1Gb being a viable LONG TERM solution, so yeh, i would.

Looks good, I don't like the RAM though. :-)
Any other suggestions in the same price range, bearing in mind it has to be DDR2-800

cheers, dragon2309

only suggestion I can make is to wait. look at my pile for instance. I'm still waiting until at least may
I'm not waiting anymore, lol, this build was originally planned for before christmas but got postponed, before that I've had my current rig for about 2.5-3years and it's REALLY flagging now, i cant wait any longer.

how much do the 8800 320mb cost over there?
Too muhc to be incorporated into the build right now, i think i will be upgrading to one of 8800's in the summer though.

Have you thought about this set of memory instead? I trust Corsair more than I do OCZ

I did see that one, i chose OCZ because i already have a 1Gb stick in my PC so naturally i went for what i knew was best. Can anyone backup corsair being better than OCZ?

dragon

OCZ had more issues with Intel 965P boards early on, but I don't know about the 680 series. In general I usually lean towards Corsair, just mainly because they are in my opinion the top DDR2 ram company.

Ok, so i decided to actually look into the 8800's a little bit better, basically I found a couple of the GTS models that are exactly the same price or just a tiny bit higher (whihc i figured i could stretch to if it really was a viable difference)

these are the ones i found in, on or around my current budget...

Inno3D 8800GTS 320MB GDDR3 Dual DVI PCI-E - LINK

BFG 8800GTS OC 320MB DDR3 Dual DVI PCI-E - LINK

XFX 8800GTS 320MB DDR3 Dual DVI TVO PCI-E - LINK

Now, strangely the last one listed there, just a standard 8800GTS is more expensive than the middle one which is an OC version from BFG. What's the deal with that??

Also, which one out of those three would be the better option to go for, and would it really be a long term viable performance boost with comparison to my previously selected 7900GTO???

cheers, dragon

are you kidding me?? its gonna own the GTO hands down lol

id look at the XFX or BFG OC
Thats what i was hoping to hear... also, THIS

That comparison kinda puts it into perspective a bit more, it even says the GTS has locked pipelines that you can unlock with a BIOS flash, im guessing this would take it to GTX standards?

So does anyone else have any input as to which graphics card to buy??

I'm delaying ordering for a few days to get this sorted out.

Definitely the 8800GTS. It's a much better investment than the 7900GTO, at only £40 more. Although I don't really understand why they are so cheap on eBuyer... :/

Have you thought about going for a 1GB RAM stick instead of 2x512MB? When the time comes for you to upgrade for 2GB, you don't want all your RAM slots being used by 512MB modules, do you?

Oh, and I can back Corsair up. I have their XMS2 TWIN2X memory. I have had it running from the rated 667Mhz up to 1010Mhz... :D

if your considering upgrading in the summer anyway, and you believe you will happily have the money then i say stick with the 7900GTO.

Lets be honest here, is having a GTO instead of an 8000GTS really going to hamper your gaming experience based on what you had previsouly. At the end of the day your going to see a huge performance increase no matter which you choose.

Go for the 7900GTO for now and then so long as you believe you will have the funds for it upgrade to a DX10 capable card in the summer. By that time there will be more competition on the market for cards and as such you will be more likely to get a cracking card for a decent price.

I simply dont see the point in currently going for a next gen card other than for bragging rights. Yes the 8800 series are blistering at the moment. But is it really making a huge difference based on the current stock of games we have out at the moment. Are there more than a handful of games that will currenly give you the benefit of having a dx10 capable card?

Stick with the 7900GTO and upgrade at a later date, sure you can get some of that money back selling it later on :)

That's a good point. But then he might as well go with a 7800GT or an X1800 series card (basically something cheaper)... There's not point putting £140 into a card which will be replaced in 3 - 4 months.
