Anyone heard of SilenX products?

I've seen the brand name quite often when looking through various types of fans as well as other cooling products.Besides their home page seen at http://www.silenx.com/productcart/pc/mainindex.asp You will note that the brand name there is seen in the "good" list of power supplies.

Good:
Antec(except Smart Power models) - Astec - AOpen - Channel Well - Coolermaster - Enermax(except Liberty models)
- Enlight - Fortron Source (Sparkle) - HEC - OCZ Technology - PC Power & Cooling - PowerMan
- Seasonic - SilenX - SilverStone - Tagan - TTGI/SuperFlower - Vantec - Zippy / Emacs - Verax - Zalman
- Corsair

Bad:
Allied - Antec Smart Power models seem to lack(recommend True Power or NeoHE) - Aspire - CoolMax - DEER - Enermax Liberty models - EYE-T
- KingStar - L&C - Linkworld - Logisys - PowerMagic - PowerUp - Powmax - Q-Tec - Raidmax - Skyhawk - Star
- Turbolink - Ultra - ThermalTake(complaints heard) - Rosewill

I ran across SilenX a few minutes ago. These stats are amazing!

For a 120x120x38mm fan, 90CFM at only 18DB!!

Looks like people like them:

If I ever need a fan, I might try one of those.
I'm afraid they're overrated. With SilenX, 90CFM & 18DB means 18DB at minimum starting voltage, and up to 90CFM at full throttle. Custom PCs have a review of one rated at 90CFM & 14DB. They find it moves 72CFM @ 30DB, not exactly quiet.

At least some of the SilenX PSUs are rebadged FSPs with a fan mod that reduces the noise but also airflow.

Gee? Thanks for telling me that. Now I will have to move it to the... "blankity blank" list! I spend more time editing that lately. :( :P

I have a SilentX fan I got a while back but never really used. Personally, I wasn't too impressed. Yes, it was very quiet, but the fan itself got very hot. It'd probably be just fine, but perhaps give out sooner? Eh, either way, my case came with a fan so I just used it rather than the SilentX I had purchased previously.

Don't you love buying something you'll never use? On planning a second 500gb sata drive here I'll probably still be running the same 480w supply instead of bumping up to the 550w just sitting around waiting for something to do. Meanwhile SilenX got moved to the end of the "foober" list for supplies.

Eh...thing was I had a use for it because my previous PC came with a 120mm fan that used molex, and I wanted the 3pin connection. However, that machine gave me loads of problems so I went to a Compaq until I had time to spend on a new PC.

I still have a 120gb drive tied up on loan in another build waiting for the owner to decide when he wants the sata drive setup as a stand alone drive. It was hoped that it would go into a new case for a student some time? But you at least have a spare fan lying around if one does quit on you until replacing that with a better one.

I never said they were bad, just giving info. FSP = Fortron, by the way. Personally I prefer a PSU that moves a lot of air even if it isn't so quiet, and I have heard some complaints about long term reliability, but they're still a lot better than most of the other units in that list.

You know that some of those in the "bad" list are certainly there for a reason. foobarville! :P So far I've yet to see one Antec go. But when you order a case with a supply already in it... only two weeks life expectancy!

I know, the older ATX1.3 Purepowers/TR2s were horribly overrated, but the newer Toughpower series are very good. For that matter, while I don't consider Thermaltakes newer midrange units to be the best of the best, they're not that bad either.

The same can be said for Ultra. Everyone keeps holding a grudge against them, but it was only one production run of the Youngyear built X-Connect that had mass failures. The Wintech built X-Finitys/X2s are solid units, and the newer Andyson built X3s and X-Pros are among the best you'll find.

But I've said all this before.

Another good/bad list edit?

We need a thread for rating supplies so I don't have to keep re-editing the same lists. Who is for that? Naturally we can leave a few things like SilenX in the ??? list.

Why can't Ceewi just edit it every once in a while? Is it that big of an issue?

Well? the lists are right there. It's upto ceewi1 to do that on his own if he wants to. :P It's by no means any big issue here since I never seem to have any problems with supplies. ("don't forget the cheapo that came with..." "quiet!" )

Some of you have probably seen the list I posted and then deleted after a few days. I was convinced that posting it in the way I had led to some highly subjective judgments, and made it very difficult to compare radically different units with their own strengths and weaknesses.

I still intend to work on providing that information in another form, but I just don't have the time to devote to that sort of a project at the moment. Meanwhile, I welcome any attempt to make it easier for our members to choose a PSU - provided, of course, that the information is accurate.

Well that's one reason I keep moddong a comparison set of lists. What could be a big help is a flexible sticky that would be updated on occasion. That would be somewhat of a universal list rather then simply a private one.
