HIS Radeon X1600 Pro IceQ

I recently built a new computer from scratch. everything was going well. got a lot of advice from this forum. i decided to finally get a "good" video card and purchased a His Radeon X1600 Pro AGP 512 mb card.

as soon as i installed the card i started having trouble and looked in the forums for solutions. i see many people have the same problem but no one has posted a solution. to my knowledge everything in my computer is up to spec for the card. i have already tested my power supply to insure it was not the problem.

heres the problem. card WILL NOT run a 3d application. as soon as a game starts the screen goes blank and computer crashes.

my setup:

biostar KM8M800 mobo
AMD athlon X2 3800 / and a fancy asus cooling fan (not sure which one!)
maxtor 300 gb sata hardrive
maxtor 80 gb ide hardrive
coolmax 550w power supply
corsair extreme DDR2 800 ram (2x512)

if anyone can help me id really appreciate it. if you need more specs, let me know. thanks.

Save the memory and start with a new list of hardwares. Going with an ATI, EVGA, BFG, MSI, or Sapphire model card would have been a good start. The problems seen besides on a lesser name card could well be from the software environment mainly. But that doesn't rule out incompatibilities seen with the hardware combination either. Corsair memory while being one of the top notch performance brands can see problems on some boards just like OCZ memory can see problems on Asus models.
 
wait...what's the difference in brands..I keep seeing ATI X1950 and then ASUS X1950..can someone explain?

Did you update the video cards driver and the motherbords chipset drivers and I think that card has a floppy power connector, did you plug that in?
 
i updated the drivers for the vid card. i am using the chipset drivers that came on the cd for my mobo. i had more trouble after going to updated vid drivers so i went back to the one on the disc. i have the floppy connector hooked up and it is suppling power.

as far as components hardware components not working together, ive pretty much traced all problems back to the new vid card. my old msi radeon 9550 works awsome with this new computer! i just wanted more!

i tried to run some direct x tests but the computer just keeps crashing with the HIS card. no problems with the msi card.

any other suggestions? i bought this card from tiger direct, i have a feeling returning it is going to be like pulling teeth.
 
You should return it anyways because the x1600PRO is a pretty poor card. I would go with a 7600 series or the x800/x850 series.
 
I would toss it back right away if you knew the card was the actual problem. When installing the card did you change the bios setting from AGP to PCI-E? That will make a big difference from the start.
 
i dont have a pci express board. i didnt see anything that would allow you to change the setting. my board allows me to change the settings for fast read/wright, different memory sizes (64,128,256,512,etc), and 4x or 8x.

i find it hard to believe an X1600 is not an upgrade from a 9550.

ill call tiger tomarrow. see what they say. im gonna try to find a number for HIS as well.
 
Try underclocking the card using atitool.. some people with this issue solved it by trying that.. this seems to be a huge problem with these cards and i havent been able to find a fix, So a return wouldn't be a bad idea.
 
I'm running the same exact card in this.. the HIS x1600 Pro...
I don't have any problems here, except when I updated the drivers to the latest, I had a little glitching in game...
That was when I downloaded the drivers from ATI.com

So I got super annoyed, and downloaded them straight from the HIS website.
Not a problem ever since.
I'm not going to say the card is outstanding, I was running an 8500LE before this one... But it's an improvement for sure.

Surprisingly that wasn't the intended one I had in mind. But when the ico files proved too large or in the wrong format I had to do some shopping around and then...:eek: that looks good for an animated one but... save to jpg was the solution there.
 
let me give ati tool a try. i use it to overclock my 9550. but the version i have doesnt support the new card. ill download it and try it out.

i also tried drivers from ati and his. i actually seen this on his's website:

Q6.X1K AGP series Direct X unavailable
A. Recently, we have found out that X1K AGP series would not have DirectX enabled on some KT400 motherboard when using Catalyst 6.5 or later. This will result a poor performance or even error when running 3D applications/games.

Not all KT400 motherboard would have this problem. And not only KT motherboard, Intel/SIS may have this issue too. The driver fix will be available by October 2006.

For workaround, please use Catalyst 6.1 driver if you encounters such issue.

Users are recommended to check if they are affected by this issue. They can go to "System Information" -> "DirectX Diagnostic Tools" to check if DirectX is available or not. If not, users should uninstall the current installed display driver and re-install to use Catalyst 6.1.

Catalyst 6.1 is available at:

If DirectX is enabled, users/customers do not need to roll back to the old version driver.

im not entirely sure if that pertains to me but i tried it anyways. the results were even worse performance.
 
yea, the info from HIS made things worse. go figure. i uninstalled all the chipset drivers for my board and let windows use default drivers. im making head way. vid card will make it about 5 mins into a game before freezing up. gonna try running ati tool now.
