currently ive got a AMD Athlon 64 3700+ single core processor, and im thinking about gettin a dual core.

ive found a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, and i was just wondering, is it just that ''100'' faster or does the X2 stand for 2 of these 3800, or is X2 just the name of the processor. i would go for something a bit higher but im getting a directx 10 8800 as well and i dont wanna spend too much.

you'll see a performance increase with multitasking and multithreaded operations, not a huge increase but you will most definitely notice the gain. Single threaded and gaming operation will gain no increase.. yet. In a about a year (i suspect) most games will be able to take advantage of multi-core proc's but till then your actually better off with the single core for gaming. But seeing as dual cores are taking over making the upgrade now is hardly a bad idea, it's a future-proofed one. :)

Single threaded stuff will never show an increase with the addition of cores.

It wont be too much faster in games, since it is clocked lower, but it will perform better in multi-threaded games.
