Hardware taking up RAM ??

Howzit all

MY pc specs...

Intel 3.2ghz cpu with ht (LGA 775)
4gb ddr ram (4x1gb)
250gg SATA + 120gb ATA
310W PSU
ATI Radeon X800xl 512mb PCI-e
DVD Writer

Ok.. so here is my question..

The machine works fine, but when in the BIOS, it detects the 4gb of memory and states that 1gb is used up by my hardware

I installed xp pro.. It only detects 3gb ram (Probably because of BIOS) ...
But now when I start games of benchmark programs, it only detects 2gb ram ??

Any ideas ... is it possible for the hardware to take up so much RAM ??

Wow! 4GB or RAM, What do you do to need that much?

Some of the system processors will use RAM, but I can't see it using that much, maybe because you have that much it will use more...

I thought that i have read some where that XP can only detect up to 3 gigs of ram, I am however not sure weather or not it still uses the 1 gig it's not detecting?

maybe some one else with more experience would like to comment on this.

XP can detect a lot more than that, that's why you can buy boards that can have up to 8GB of RAM...

I think your 1GB of RAM is being used by other programs, press CRTL + ALT + DEL and click the Proccesses tab and post a picture of it here, that way we can tell how much RAM is being used by other programs.

Are you saying I don't have experiance? :P

that may very well be the case, I went to office depot to check out the vista notebooks one of them was using up 900mb ram just from the all the bloatware crap..

EDIT: Wait this cant be the case I just went up and re read his post, says XP is only detecting the 3 out of 4 gigs so that may reaffirm my first post. I am not trying to say your wrong or anything Kornowski, just pointing that out.

Here is a link to another forum with almost the same issue, 4th post down guy says XP will only detect 3 gigs. So I dunno..

Ok .. I'll take a screen shot then I'll post it ...
I'll be loading Vista as well this weekend to see if this myth is true

I read up a little bit and it says to recognize that much RAM you will need a 64bit CPU and a 64bit OS...

What do you have at the moment, what CPU is it?

Oh right...

Your computer may not be showing it but it does actually have that amount of RAM on it, I mean, you don't lag when playing a game or anything do you?

What OS are you running?

I'm running XP Pro ... Doing Vista this weekend ...

No lags at all with games .. I mean it does show in the BIOS that I have 4gb installed ... and 1gb allocated for hardware (Also shows in BIOS)

I don't think there's a problem, your BIOS says you have 4GB so it's Ok, XP is a bit funny with the subject though :P

I don't get what you mean? Allocate RAM?

Hardware doesn't really use RAM, it's the software on the computer that does.

My G15 Keyboard eats up 40% of my RAM right off the bat :/
Damn LCD and crap ;p

But I had 2gb, and dropped down to 1gb (put the other 1gb in another computer to get it running).
You don't happen to have anything like that, do you? ;p
Like a LCD display on your case, that displays temps and such?
I'm not sure if that even uses RAM or not, or like an internal Case battery that just uses probes to determine temp...
