Some Vista Questions

1: I have heard to wait until the bugs come out and there is a #2 version of Ultimate. I heard/read a lot of negitive reports about XP when I got mine (XP Pro-Media Edition) but I have really liked the program and can't understand what all the fuss was about. Wait or upgrade now?

2: I have also heard to do a completely new install and not to use the 'upgrade' version. Anything to this and why? If I do a clean install is there any downside to buying an OE (less expensive) version?

3: If I do an upgrade will all my files and programs remain intact?

I'm using vista ultimate at the moment, and i cant see any bugs with it at all, and that's on my rather cruddy system in my sig. Im not entirely sure what people are on about either. As long as you don't use the integrated firewall and anti-malware utilities. That would be silly

OEM you mean, it's against microsoft reseller rights for a company to sell you an OEM disc without the components (Or at least a large part of them) to build a new computer. OEM is designed for people who build to sell, not who buy to keep. Not sure if it's actually illegal, but your sure as hell not supposed to do it, you also don't get any tech support with OEM versions

Supposedly yes, that's in theory, but you have to remember this is microsoft, anything can happen, backup your important stuff before you try it anyway. Just to be on the safe side... but yes, that's what's supposed to happen.

It's design isn't the greatest, i haven't used the firewall yet, so i cant REALLY comment, but apparently it is by default set up to allow all connections and only block the ones you tell it to, kinda liek a massive reverse of a firewall, lol.

Anyway, you should never totally rely on windows firewall anyway, even if it was good, i would feel much safer with zone alarm pro sitting in the taskbar and Avira AntiVir right along side it

Well, there are certain versions of Vista you cannot "just upgrade" to. Meaning, you have to do a clean install, deleting all your personal files and programs. When I installed Home Premium from XP Pro, I was not able to keep my files.
 
I think all the fuss goes both ways. Its not as awesome as people are saying, and its not as bad either. Vista has its pros and cons just like any other os. Honestly I really liked vista, but the spotty driver support was my biggest issue. I would be using vista right now if it could properly run counter-strike source with my video card, but it doesn't seem to be able to do so.

I would say upgrade and see how far you get. Nothing wrong with trying. If you don't like it or somethign doesn't work for you, you can always go back to xp.
 
I would go from XP Pro-Media Edition to Vista Ultimate on one computer and XP to Vista Home Premium on another. My files are backed up on an external hard drive but I would really hate to have to reinstall all my programs (been there, done that).
 
I agree completely with dragon2309 on the anti-virus and firewall statements. The built-in security isn't as good as something like Anti-Vir and Zone Alarm, plus it will probably be the first thing on somebodies list to try to hack, and MS won't be as motivated to try to keep it up to date either... As for the OS overall, Vista has actually been a pleasant surprise for the most part, except for the trouble with the drivers; however if you have easy access to download the newer drivers, it isn't that big of a deal.
