Hello
When i turn on my new computer - instaed of windows loading up an error message comes up saying that

windows root>\system32\hal.dll needs to be installed again.

Is there anything i can do besides formatting the drive and installing windows again?

Put a windows CD in the drive and go to the recovery console. Then type 'expand <cddrive>:\i386\hal.dl_ <windowsdrive>:\windows\system32\hal.dll' repace cd drive and windows drive with what they should be (probably d and c respectively)

So i should type in recover console

expand <f>:\i386\hal.dl_ <c>:\windows\system32\hall.dll

Or do i not nedd the <>'s

also is 'hal.dl_ <' meant to be 'hal.dll_ <'

Im not too sure on what letter drive my cd drive is :( if i use d and it wont work ill try f ??

boot into recovery console and log in as an admin under your windows installation and then do this code, this rebuilds everything from the ground up and will fix the missing dlls and ntldr sometimes as well

Code:
attrib -h c:\boot.ini
attrib -s c:\boot.ini
attrib -r c:\boot.ini

del c:\boot.ini

bootcfg /rebuild
(make sure you use /fastdetect and /noexecute=optin switches)

chkdsk /r (let this run)

fixboot

This should rebuild lots of system files and problems and is a good place to start with out having to reload the OS.

You don't need the < > and it is hal.dl_

If you put the wrong drive in, it just wont be able to find it so no harm there.
