hiding file extensions

I was wondering if there was any way of hiding a file extension when downloading, or if there is a proxy out there that will hide it for me.

Does anyone know wether this is possible? Thankyou very much for your support.

A way is to put your file/s in a zip file.... They will only see the .zip file when downloading...

That wont work, but thanks anyway.

I need to hide the file extension so that it will either not be there or that it changes to a predetermined file extension, like one that does not actually exist e.g. file.d44

Just rename it as ,
and who ever wants to open it you just retype the extension back again and it will work, it works for me when I hide files no one can open it unless you have the "key" the key being the right extension.
but if you where knowledgeable in computers you can find away of opening it.

Can you explain in why you want to hide it? it might help us figure out a way...

i need to bypass my school server and download banned file extensions.

thanks guys

PS- benji i was looking at your site and i thought it was pretty cool. My mum teaches frecnh here in Australia.

Just do what H_L said. All you have you do when you are downloading something off of the Internet is right click on it and go to something like 'Save Link As/Save Target As'. From there go to the 'Save as type' drop-down bar and choose 'All Files'. Add an extension that isn't blocked by your school's server (like .doc or .pdf) and download whatever you were going to download. From there you can change it back to whatever the original file extension was.

well said;)
that should work:)

That was a brilliant idea-made me really excited. I dont know why but when i try to 'save target as' a file download box comes up and it will start as, for example; music.mp3 but then all of a sudden change to music.htm and pop up with the box that asks me where to save it and what to name it.

I tried just making it another file extension anyway, i even tried saving it as mp3 but it just downloads as a file that is 1 kb or so.

anyone know why????

Thanks again guys- you have all been really helpful.

Well, I used to to this in my old Shcool.

It's very simple. They block things using the default browser, being IE?

Anyway, I took portable firefox in on a memory stick and used it, nothing was banned because they didn't ban the sites for that browser, try downloading something with that, but download it to your memory stick, they can't detect it as easily then and you may be able to have any file extension.

I wanted to point that word because they can.. and schools are getting stronger and stronge about this...

Man am I glad I went to high school before the whole MySpace/paranoia about what kids are doing on the Internet era...

is there anyway that one of you guys could host firefox portable as a .XXX file or something? so that i could download it from here? THanks

I believe this is against forum rules becuase it involves getting around security. I am quite surprised that that this thread has not been locked a while ago. And I'm sure that they have a good reason for blocking the extesions also. Plus they will most likely have moneriting software installed watching what sites you go to no matter whether you using a portable browser or not.
