Latest Intel and AMD Processors (Need Help Choosing a New PC)

Hi,

My PC gave out and so I am using my laptop at the moment.

Anyway I want to get a new PC with the fastest processor.

The one in my old PC is a Athalon 3800

I have not kept up with the latest processors and saw that Intel now do the Duo Processor. Could someone explain please the difference in speed as the last time i looked at Intel it was the Pentium 4 based processors.

I am a little confused as the processor speeds for Intel seem lower than they were for Pentium 4s.

I need advice on each brand AMD and Intel please and which is the latest and fastest processor each company do. I always used to go with Intel just my last one was AMD.

Any reading material on each would also help me in choosing which type of PC to go for and where to get it from.

Thanks for your help

Rob

Speed? You mean GHz? That doesn't matter anymore. There are these things in CPU's called pipelines, the shorter they are, the less speed you need to get data through them. And the Core 2 Duo, my friend, is unmatched in performance for that reason. And you can not use a Core 2 duo on another motherboard than one with a Socket LGA 775. And AMD processors do not use that socket, so upgrading to a Core 2 duo is out of the options.

Thanks for the advice. I always thought it was the processors speed that was important. That is what I always went for in the past.

Could you tell me is this the latest processor from dell with duo core or is there a later one than Intel® Core™ 2 Quad-Core QX6700 Extreme Processor (2.66GHz, 1066MHz, 8MB

I want one that will play all the latest games with ease and for quite sometime to come without needing to upgrade the processor or graphics card.

Thanks

the core2 quad is the fastest cpu available at the moment but it will depend on your budget as they are pricey.

A core 2 duo E6600 would probably be a better option. Currently it outperforms the best AMD can offer in their FX-62 at a fraction of the price.

dont pay too much attention to the GHz rating of the cpu, the new architectures can get a lot more out of the processors for a lower GHz.

Thanks very much for that it helped me loads :)

On the area of graphics cards would you go with nVidia or ATI.

Rob

either to be honest, each have their plus points and only a fanboy will try and spout to you of ones superiority over the other.

Nvidia do have the edge in terms of most powerful card at the moment with the 8800GTX but ATI are due to release their R600 series soon and hearsay suggests it will see them take the lead again. So if you are after the best possible performance with cost not being an issue then wait a short time. The prices of the 8800gtx will no doubt drop when the R600 comes out. :)
