About to try Vista...

So you are making the big move up! :P finally! I hope you are going to run this as the second OS in a desktop. You won't want it as the primary OS in your portable there. "where are those ... drivers that are supposed to be.." will be the reaction. I know that one already! Get ready for the new user account control "annoyance" until you get sick of that and disable it! :P All I can say is have fun!

OK, I got out my spare 60GB drive and I'll load it into my machine shortly. I'm about 1/4th done downloading Vista Business, so hopefully it'll be worth it. hehe, but of course, I'm not using my primary drive just in case

And if anyone's wondering about legal issues...

:P

I've had vista business on my work machine for a few weeks now. It kind of just pisses me off in general. Mainly because it takes twice as long or longer to do general configuration stuff because they changed the whole interface around. A lot of third party apps broke, and networking to third parties also broke. Overall, I am not impressed and I still have to run a virtual machine of XP Pro because I have to use some Active X websites for my job and some of them do not work in IE7. As far as I can tell you can't run IE 6 on vista.

Finished Expanding file(the installer) About to "Install features" Hehe... I'm slightly excited to try vista, but glad I still have XP on this machine.

Well what do you F*ing know... I install it on my 60GB, but it puts the boot loader on my 160GB drive. What the hell? Why did it even touch that drive?? The 60GB was set as the master.

UGH...I'm pissed now... Time to look for ways to remove that damn boot manager from my 160GB. I guess I have to disconnect what drives I don't want it to see next time... Geeze

Question: I got rid of the boot screen and crap. However, I still have the C:\Boot directory on my HD. How can I get rid of this? I've tried in Windows, Safemode, and though BartPE. Each gives me an error...

I will tell you what I did to prevent that... I kinda knew about it from the start.
I unplugged my main HDD.. Installed vista.. then plugged it in again.
And I switch boot priority from the BIOS to choose which hard I wanna boot from.....
You will have some issues writing data on the drive with vista on it while you are using XP.

And sorry I have nothing in mind for the C:\boot problem now :(

Hmm... That was my original plan, but I foresaw nothing like this. I mean honestly, what kind of installer puts a boot manager on the secondary disk. I mean it was even 2nd on the list of drives! I figured the worst case would be MY fault, somehow installing vista on my primary drive, not be doing the right stuff and SETUP deciding to use both drives.

Besides the boot folder, there were some other system files and an addition Program Files folder... UGH! Oh well... My drive is rather messy to begin with. I might just reload XP in a few weeks once I'm sure I backed up everything on the machine... It's about that time anyway...

I see you ran smack into the same thing when installing RC1 back in Sept. here. There's "no way" when running XP to remove the boot folder. I was able to get rid of the sub folder however by removing RC1 and at that time installing XP Pro on the second drive here. I told you to have fun. That's what you are going to have now for sure!

Even when installing XP Pro it took charge while the Home version on the primary became the secondary OS until the boot.ini was edited. Vista takes over being the newer version like Pro did. In order to isolate the XP Pro installation now on the sata just added the other two drives were unplugged like Shady has pointed out. But the primary here is a little "overdue" for the yearly wipe anyways. When you mentioned getting out the spare drive I asked if this was going into a desktop.

However you can still set the XP installation as the default OS and even remove XP from the new boot manager with a shareware version of VistabootPRO. The home page for this is seen at http://www.vistabootpro.org/ You can even rename "previous version of Windows" to "XP HOME" or "XP PRO" for dual booting as well as setting the delay before the default starts loading.

I would try buying windows vista for about another year or so so they can get rid of all the bugs and viruses. Then I might think about buying it but in the mean time ill have to put up with XP.

Bugs needing fixing, driver support, update patches, yes! viruses??? They haven't had a chance to write too many for Vista yet. :P

I got it for free from the school so I figured I'd just go for it :P

Got it for free but didn't isolate... XP! and the primary drive? ouch! Here I simply wanted to examine the new boot manager and allowed RC1 to do it's thing. When installed over XP Pro on the second drive I was lazy and didn't unplug the primary again. But now that I removed the XP listing in the BCD I can't get it back in without reinstalling Vista? I'll wipe the boot folder off and use the F8 boot option the board offers.
