I have a 250gb (138gb free of 232gb) sata HDD with Vista on it and i want to partion/shrink 30gb so i can dual boot XP. I am trying to use the Windows Disk Management to shrink the drive but it is only letting me shrink 15937mb. Any suggestions on how i can shrink 30gb because 15gb won't be enough.

Gparted Live For Cd!

Like the title says the free Linux partitioning tool, Gnome Partition Editor, has an iso disk image for creating a bootable cd for creating, deleting, and resizing Fat16, Fat32, NTFS, Solaris, and other partition types besides the Linux Vfat type partitions. You can download the 0.3.3.0 version at http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-livecd-0.3.3-0.iso?modtime=1165447791&big_mirror=0

Do you have a program that burns iso disk images to cd-rs? BurnOn has a free version of their retail product that has seen some good results here. That's available at http://www.burnworld.com/burnoncddvd/ The link above is a direct shortcut for the platform independent version. The other newer ones released require mounting information. If you have any problem with the link there all versions are found at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828

For the tutorial and other information on GParted go to http://www.howtoforge.com/partitioning_with_gparted

could of just told me to use gparted but i like the enthusiasm. lol you helped me about a month ago and you guided me threw gparted. i always see you posting. do you own this site?

Own this site? Are you kidding?! Of coutse you are I think? :P

Recently prior to installing Vista on the second ide drive here I has to shrink the XP Pro primary from the 238gb down to right around 147gb to create a second storage partition there. What do you think was able to do that effectively? GParted is the name that should come right up. It's free and effective.

In fact a new article someone posted at http://www.computerforum.com/78086-dual-boot-xp-vista-same-hdd.html points directly to GParted when going to dual boot XP and Vista on the 2nd part or Vista and XP on the 2nd part. First you have to "resize" or shrink the primary in order to have the space available for the second one. GParted as well as the Windows installer can be used to create the NTFS type partition needed there. Gee? I wonder who started that thread? hhmmm...

lol:o

im stupid. i did something wrong in gparted and it started to add more memory to my hdd from a dif partion and so i hit cancel because i wanted to subtract not add and i said if i cancel it could screw up my hdd but it was really late at night and i was really tiered to i canceled it anyways and sure enough it f***ed up my hdd . im so pissed. gpated erased my whole hdd. all my data was gone. music, videos, files and everything i have had in the last 5 months..luckly i have all my music on my second comp but i still lost all my videos and documents. at least i learned a leason. im reinstalling vista right now and it had been hanging on "completing installation" for 5 hours now...after i install vista i am going to dual boot Vista, XP and Suse.

OUCH! GParted has an apply option that is only works when clicked after you have seen the primary reduced in size on an indicator. If you simply shrunk it down too far boot with the live cd and reverse the shrink until the partition is brought up to the size you wanted. The only way you would see the partition wiped is by choosing the remove option and clicking apply then. Vista is probably hanging due to the original partition remaining.

Is there anyway to install vista with four partions? or should i install vista then partion everything? because right now i have a 35gb XP partion, 150gb Vista partion, 15gb Ubuntu partion and a 40gb music fat32 partion. Vista has been hanging on the "completing installation" for over 23 hours now. and i dont think it is going to finish. any suggestions on which OSs i should install first and last and when to partion each partion? this is how im trying to do it right now but its hanging during the vista installation...partion everything, then formate everything, then install Vista, then xp, then Ubuntu?

Before grabbing the new 500gb sata drive now in XP Pro sat on the first of two partitions on the second ide drive installed here. The second was a storage partition that was supposed to be moved to the new sata with Vista running as the second OS to replace it. NADA! For some reason the installer hung when trying to dual OS there. Vista then simply overwrote XP Pro leaving no choice but to XP on the sata to run the two versions of XP along with Vista. Vista wants the entire drive when installing!

The trick for dual booting Vista with XP is to first install Vista as a stand alone and then shrink the single primary down for reallocating the remaining drive space as one or more partitions. But it should go right onto the first primary already there by using the current Windows and simply upgrade that.
