I currently have this computer:

Dell 2400
P4 2.2 Ghz
40GB HD
512mb PC 2700 DDR-SDRAM
i845G MB
mPGA-478 CPU

I have the chance to have the following for free:

Dell 3000
P4 3.0 Ghz
80GB HD
512mb PC 3200 DDR
i865p/pe/g/i848p MB
socket 478mpga CPU

My question is how much better is this computer than my current one in terms of internet surfing, listening to music, watching videos/DVD's, iPod use, and light photo editing?

Will I see a differnece? Is it worth the effort to take all the information on my current computer and transport it to the new one?

It shouldn't be much of a challenge, assuming both drives are IDE and there is a spare connector on the HDD cable, put the drive in the new PC in Master with Slave present, you may not need that for your drives, and the other in slave, connect them up identically and they should work.

Or you can get an external HDD enclosure and make it portable, either way you'll have your info handy.

That PC should be able what you want it to do.

It isnt much of an upgrade, but get it anyways. You can put the ram from the old computer in the new one and have a GB. Go for it.

dude its free, does it matter all that much? lol if it isnt that good sell it on ebay

Here's what you do:
1. Take the 3.0GHz processor and put it in the tower that has the 2.2GHz in it. Save the 2.2GHz for later use/posterity/whatever. (It should switch out with the other with no problems).
2. Take the 512mb RAM and add it to your tower to make 1GB (yay!).
3. Take the hard drive, format it, and put it in your tower as an extra drive.
4. Congratulations you just gave your computer a nice boost in specs and performance.

Agree. I tends to not save the 2.2GHz CPU. Just take the CPU, RAM, HD. Sell the rest in ebay.
