Upgradeability of dell computers

why is it that dells suck for upgrading, could a person just add a new mother board then they can do all the up grades they want to it, or is it how they build the case, which restricts you to up grade the computer with new hardware.

basically dell has it setup so u either have to buy their components to upgrade, or send it to them, basically so they make more money off u, and yes their cases are very awkward to

It's true, Dell is probably the worst mail order computer you can buy...

I built a server for a client of mine who own a Dell and will never buy one again because of the expandability.

If you bought one, my suggestion at this point is getting rid of it - like donate it down to your kids or something. And build your own... the case, the mobo and everything else makes it harder to work on.

Just my two cents. You can ignore me if you like.

Dells use a different form factor to most computers called 'BTX'. This standard features a different airflow pattern and different motherboard screw holes, making Dells difficult to upgrade.

i understand about upgrading and it would be nice if it were easier, but i just wanted to say, cause u mentioned changing the mobo. if u didnt kno, changing to mobo would be a violation of the windows oem software, from what i kno, cause the OS is restricted to the computer aka the mobo.

That form factor isnt for dell only, its actually a standard, just not as well known. And actually, its a much better design then standard ATX boards are.

Well it keeps Prescotts cool, but it's neigh on impossible to get a BTX motherboard, the manufacturers don't seem there's enough of a market, I wouldn't mind if it helped kept the tower cooler.:)

Oh, and it's a voilation of Forum rules to talk about pirated software, beware of the moderators.;)

for a proper fit, you'd need another btx motherboard.

however, just because the screw holes are different doesen't mean you *can't* use an ATX motherboard. you'd just need to modifiy the case to accomidate the motherboard. basicly you'd have to drill new holes where they should be (based on the motherboards mounting holes and the location it will be in in the case), get risers to put in the holes so you can mount the motherboard, and you'd possibly have to cut out parts of the back of the case to allow access to the motherboards ports and expansion slots. (yes, i have done it before :P )

HP is just as bad. big companies use there own specially designed things so you HAVE to goto them and buy there drasticly over priced stuff. its evil, yet it is a great way for them to make money.
