ATI Radeon x1600 Pro 512 MB PCI-E x16- PURCHASED
Audigy SE Sound Card- PURCHASED
250GB SATAII 16MB Cache Western Digital HD- PURCHASED
Windows XP Professional 64-Bit- PURCHASED

I was planning on starting this in a few months, but CompUSA had a closing sale, so I bought some of the parts now, and I'm not gonna just let them sit, so I'll be ordering the rest soon.

I know that the video card isn't great, but I didn't want to spend too much since I plan on getting Vista and a DX10 card once the DX10 games start coming out. For now, this system will run all of my games very well, including my Test Drive Unlimited preorder.

Please post both positive and negative opinions, and suggestions on the things that have not yet been purchased.

It's a nice system, but if you want my honest opinion, I would gone with a Core 2 Duo setup and a 7600 series video card. The x1600PRO is a pretty poor performing card.

And just out of curiosity, why did you buy XP Pro x64 when Vista is out?

My uncle gave me a free copy of Pro x64. He works for a company that works with computers, so they have lots of extra stuff sitting around.

I will eventually get Vista, but from my friends experience with it, I'm going to hold off. I'm sure Vista isn't always that bad, but as long as XP works, I'll use it.

As far as the video card and Athlon X2 AM2 setup... CompUSA had a huge closing sale. The video card and motherboard totaled to only $115, too hard to pass up. The video card is only going in to play Test Drive Unlimited for a while, and then in a few months I'll probably get a DX10 card.

yes but as he says there was an offer on the motherboard and GPU which was too hard to pass up, and to be fair rightly so. If the plan is to upgrade to one of the DX10 cards at a later date then fair enough. Looks good.

Dont see what the issue with XP64 bit is too, especially if its a freebie with a legit license. The OS works perfectly well, still the odd driver issue but most can be found.

All in all it looks like a pretty good build so far :)

nothing looks terribly bad excpet i wouldnt run xp 64, id rather run linux then that. upgade to better xp or just get vista if yu can. also i would get a nicer graphics card when i got the money if i were you. but hey, it beats my computers.(yes i know some of you may find tht sad, im poor leave me alone)

he has already provided he will be upgrading his windows and vid card, looks good to me it should be fine till u get ur vid card and windows then it will be even better

I'm going to look up drivers for all of my stuff to make sure I can run them on x64. Other than that, what do I need to watch out for with x64?

Also, as long as the x1600 will run Test Drive Unlimited(even if on lowest settings), I'm fine with it for now. And in the future... hopefully some incredible and impressive DX10 card.

Do you know how much the prices are down at Compusa because when I last went it was 10-30 percent off?

I got everything for 40-70% off. My store is within a month of shutting it's doors, so they have to get rid of their still quite large stock quickly.

Unfortunately they didn't have any AM2 processors left... only 939s. Poor 939s, nobody loves them. :D And despite being half off, their RAM was still more than I can get it for online. Everything else was an incredible deal, though. I suggest that everyone check and see if your local CompUSA is closing, since they are closing 200 total stores, I heard.
