Screen went blank

My laptop screen went blank. Does anyone know if it can be fixed? And how much it cost?

I am using my laptop hooking to a monitor. Everything else is fine but the screen is blank. Wonder what caused the problem.

Since you are seeing a good screen on an external monitor you probably have a backlight that went out. The best thing there since laptops are self contained partables is to bring it in to someone who services that brand. If you still have a warranty you would bring it back or ship it out to the dealer for service there.

I meant to say if it was under warranty. I dont know what prices go for but ive replaced a bunch under warranty, just ask them to send it to you they will usually advise against it but really, im sure you can handle installing it.

Thanks everyone the reply.

My laptop is a 4 years old IBM ThinkPad. That's all I know. Does anyone know how much it cost to fix the backlight or to replace the screen?

That you would have to get from the place you bring it into or ship it to for repair. It would have to be someone who works on IBM models or sent to one of thier service centers. The final cost would most likely outweigh it's worth at this time. Laptops like desktops lose a good 80% of their retail value in 2yrs. pr less these days. I could make a rough guess of $100+ just to start.

Thanks everyone! A co-worker suggested to trade-in for a new one. The place that accept trade-in will fix the problem and re-sell it.

Need any ideas on a new one in that case? Hopefully not another dink... sink... aaawww... think pad that is? :P Maybe one of those Sonys or some other brand?

Yes, please. And no more IBM.

Basically, I want my new laptop have the following:

Core 2 Duo
2GB Ram
Hard drive with at least 5400 rpm
A nice graphics card

It would be a bonus if I can get one that have the built-in t.v. turner. But, I know that's very expensive.

Thanks!
