Can I still order a name brand computer with XP or should I just get Vista?

I need a new laptop and need it very soon. I am not up to building my own and will likely get a Dell, HP, Toshiba, ect. Some of the current programs that I have on my XP Pro machine are not compatible with Vista. Therefore, I am leaning on wanting to get a new machine with XP. Is it even possible to still order one of these computers with XP? Circuit City and Best Buy do not seem to stock any computers with XP. Or should I just brush off all the bad Vista reviews and get a machine with Vista and try to figure out what to do with my current incompatible programs on my XP machine?

You could go with Xp if its urgent. I would recommend you to get Vista later because there might be some compatibility issues as you said. Yes, you can still order a new machine with XP.

hmmm. i just called circuit city and best buy and both of them said that it is not possible to get anything from them with xp. So I called HP and they told me that all of their machines, which they claim can be customized, only come with Vista?????

You have to custom order and from what i have seen most of the computer builders dell and gateway for example are charging extra to put xp on your system..

I've thought about this: what if my present PC totally died on me? My answer would be to get a new one, but format the hard drive to get rid of Vista, and put my OEM XP Home on it.

lol. why would you want to do that?

Why? Because... well... Vista is a boxed beta. It's nothing but a stopgap, an NTFS equivalent of ME. Everyone knows it. The disgusting DRM issues make it something I want absolutely no part of. And since some of my peripherals are older, I already know there will be no Vista drivers for them. I don't feel like having to buy a new printer, new modem, etc. Plus, MS has even announced that XP will receive Full Support through February 2009, and Extended Support through Februrary 2014. Vienna (Vista's replacement) has already been announced for Februrary 2009.

I won't be caught dead with Vista because it's unnecessary. XP is fine for my purposes. Why look for trouble?

if xp does everything you need good, but if you want to run vista for up and coming games directx 10 then good personal choice rules

Man, Bill cant seam to get much right at all. Although you have to respect the guy, none of us here could and would make an OS, much less make one compatible with our hard ware and ones we don't have, mass produce it, get popular. Although I find him...I don't know the word, but He has committed Monopoly. I think that is wrong and a horrible thing to do in some cases. But yet, in time, he will get the bugs out. When Vista SP1 comes out then maybe I'll get it. But as of now, XP SP2 is good enough. I may just have to get 2 more GB of RAM, but by the time I get Vista, the price in that RAM will have gone down. So, I'm good for now.
