Can I setup RAID after installation of OS and software?

well, depending on the controller, you could still do it, but you would lose the entire capacity you have already used on BOTH drives.

If XP and your programs are already using 10 gigs, you wont be able to use the same 10 gigs on the second drive....

id just reformat, and start over

Yeah, the easiest way is just to reformat and set up RAID 0...even if you can do it without reformatting, you still risk losing some files and running into problems down the road.

Agreed! Best to always back up your data before you do anything! Regardless of the outcome of anything.

For example, when I work on clients computers (in their offices) the first thing of priority is backing up their system(s) if they haven't already done so. Most haven't... being busy doing their business and all.

Then, at least if you re-format the disk, the data is safe.

Set up the RAID depending if you have a controller on the mobo, or a adapter.

Tell Windows you want to configure RAID when and as you are installing the OS. That's what I recall when setting them up.

Hope this helps, my 2 cents!

Anytime you need to build or rebuild a RAID 0 all data is lost and you must start from scratch. That is why it is really more efficient to run a RAID 1+0

How is that different (1+0)and what is a good backup program, preferably free?

0 + 1 would require at least 4 HDs and you would stripe each set, but the first set would be mirrored to the second set, so if anything crashed you could rebuild off the mirrored set.

Back up methods which are cheap could be:

over network
to DVD
make a ghost image
